Polygamist men cried as authorities searched their Temple. Inside the temple a bed was found with rumpled sheets and female hair. State troopers say that a lead told them that teenage girls were forced to consummate the marriage there, and where they could find the bed in the large white temple.

State officials launched what is thought to be their largest intervention in state history, taking 416 children during their six-day sweep of the complex into temporary state custody. Another 136 women, mostly mothers, left the YFZ compound to care for the children but are free to return home. The 16-year-old girl who reportedly called the shelter and her baby have not been identified among those who have been removed.

I don't know what Texas CYFD officials plan on doing with all of these children, but with the 6th highest number of Latter Day Saint members, I would assume that the Mormon Church will be attempting to pick up and help out these families.

One of the bigger problems The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is having is that several reporters from throughout the world are using the word 'mormon' in their headlines without distinction.

The public affairs office of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today complimented U.S. media outlets for being careful to distinguish between the 13-million-member international Church and a small polygamous sect raided by Texas state officers late last week.

However, the Church said that some international news outlets are running misleading reports that confuse the Church with the polygamous group. Some news outlets have even run photographs of the Mormon temple in Salt Lake City alongside the story of the polygamists.

It seems every time this particular sect of extremists come to light, the LDS church has to defend itself and its stance on polygamy. While Their website has a press only area, and has had this stance The use of the word Mormon in news reports it seems a new statement from the Church Public Affairs Office has to be put out.

Hopefully we can get these kids and women some good homes so that they won't be in foster care forever, and the state of Texas works with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Welfare program and counselors to get these people the help they need.

This is my first attempt at writing something this lengthy on the Current Event boards, so please don't kill me, I tried.

I too hope they find someplace for the women and children, but this will be difficult, since brainwashing and general ignorance of the modern world are part of the whole experiance in their lives.

I rather doubt they will want to go to LDS families, since they have been taught since childhood that the standard LDS church is evil for not keeping with the "traditional" ways.

Good job on popping your C/E cherry biggrin

If this was a pagan temple, would there be such an uproar?

Probably not since of the relatively small group of people who do identify themselves as "pagan", I can't think of a case of orginization on this scale much less an organized crime of this scale.

my biggest concern with that is that LDS temples would now some how be perceived as FLDS temples (the pictures of the Salt Lake temple in news reports doesn't help)

Some of my friends in Utah said that LDS family services gave a few wards contact number in order to try and help these kids. I just hope that it doesn't come off as sounding like a huge baptismal campaign.

There could be a problem with the search warrant. It was based primarily on a telephone call allegedly made by a 16-year-old girl claiming to have been beaten and raped by her 50-year-old 'husband.'

I don't claim to know all of the circumstances, and I certainly don't know Texas law. But the person whose statement supported the search warrant hasn't been found thus far.

The affidavits signed by chief investigator Lynn McFadden detail the 16-year-old's hushed phone calls, but days after raiding the West Texas compound, officials still aren't sure where the girl is. She is not named among the children in initial custody petitions by the state.

AP as reported in Yahoo News

The claim of exigent circumstances may help. But this case could have some problems.

yes, but I also heard that any claim of child abuse HAS to be followed up on, even if the caller is anonymous.

The Feds had a warrant, too, and the FLDS lawyers have given up fighting that aspect.

That's good news. They were on the wrong track anyway, in my opinion. They were trying to say that raiding that place was like raiding the Vatican. Like that would carry any weight.

Every female member of the bar in the region has been tagged as an ad litem out of deference to their religious beliefs. Local restauranteurs provided food for law-enforcement and evacuees until other arrangements could be made. For now, the women and children are staying at the pavillion by the stadium and on the grounds of a historical landmark fort.

I suspect that if the mothers with Stockholm Syndrome start agitating, then the hospitality will dry up quickly. I think things could get real weird, real fast.

When you begin with weird, that's often what you end up with. Something similar to Stockholm Syndrome is a real possibility, since most of these people believed what they were doing was right in the first place.

It's been tried. A simple look through the wiki article on Fred Phelps shows that he's a convicted felon, although he hasn't served any time. And some of his members have been arrested for child abuse in using kids in their protests.

That's a picture from the HBO series "Big Love." They aren't actual polygamists.

Details of the search disclosed today revealed, among other things, that they have an incinerator. Unmarked graves were alleged, but search dogs found none. I have some macabre speculation about how they have such a disproportionate number of girls, but I know that someone with more info may easily clarify the matter.

The large newpaper for the region, The San Angelo Standard Times has a website that I find mostly substandard, but they've done okay in this situation.

Actually, they are well known for exiling young men when they reach maturity or legal adulthood.
