You gotta love a government that not only ignores logic, intelligence, and big fucking holes while wasting billions of taxpayer dollars on a worthless project.

Well, they've topped themselves for despicability in building the most worthless wall in history.

Environmental laws don't apply to Bush's pet projects.

In an aggressive move to finish building 670 miles of border fence by the end of this year, the Department of Homeland Security announced today that it will waive federal environmental laws to meet that goal.

It is like someone made a sarcastic list of the worst ways to build a border security fence, but forgot the smiley emoticon and Bush took it seriously: Make it too short, put lots of holes in it, build it to last just a few decades, and choose the building sites based on if the property owner is an old family friend or not. The only thing left to complete the foul-up is to endanger the environment.

. . . opponents are concerned that it could increase the danger of extinction for endangered animals, such as the ocelot, a wild cat whose mating habits may be affected.

Bush, whoever gave you that list was JOKING!

(Homeland Security Secretary Michael) Chertoff has called the waivers a last resort, and department officials say the agency is committed to minimizing the impacts to the environment and wildlife.

Yes, of course, a last resort. Which is why the first environmental waiver under the mandate given to Homeland Security came in September, 2005, over a year before The Secure Fence Act was passed. Good to have that precedent set up nice and early, before any major complaints could be raised.

Congratulations to Bush, Chertoff, and all their little friends: you managed to take a thoroughly crappy idea and make it just that much worse.

Coyotemike tips his ocelot-skinned hat.

well thank god we'll be keeping those dangerous ocelot's out of our country.

Why is it that the administration's stupidity just doesn't even phase me anymore? I keep picturing Bush as baby new year, in a diaper, with a pacifier, Cheney in his Elmer Fudd hat with a rifle......

I have no doubt that it's part of policy to do that.

The worst thing about all of this is that President (the laws don't apply to ME!) Bush truly believes that he is doing this in the best interest of 'Homeland Security.'

I swear to Christ, that guy is even more stupid than we all give him credit for ... which is really saying something, and more than a little scary.

Totally worth it even if the environmentalists were actually telling the truth for once. The millions of illegal immigrants crossing the border leave behind staggering amounts of litter and other pollution. Why do the environmentalists not care about that? Curbing illegal immigration would be the best possible environmentalist action possible for the border region.

Illegal immigration's totally out of control and has been allowed to become so for far too long. A wall along with crackdowns on employers, citizenship checks, and aggressive deportation will help reverse a destructive trend of lawlessness and exploitation of public services by people who really should not be here.

If they want to live and work here, there are plenty of legal and planet-friendly avenues for them to do so.

I totally agree. With what you should have said:

stockula didn't say this (but should have):
To . . . tell . . . the truth for once . . . millions of illegal immigrants cross . . . the border [to] leave behind staggering amounts of [problems]. Why do [people] not care about that? Curbing illegal immigration would be the best possible . . . action possible for the border region.

Illegal immigration's totally out of control and has been allowed to become so for far too long. A . . . crackdown . . . will help reverse a destructive trend of . . . exploitation of . . . people who really should . . . be here.

I also agree that for immigrant workers "to live and work here," they need "legal and planet-friendly avenues for them to do so."

Easily obtainable work visas, easier travel across borders to visit families, and reasonable fees for work permits will definitely help curb the illegal immigration problem, stop the crimes of coyotes who trade in human flesh for profit, and remove the reason for an expensive, useless, and environmentally destructive wall.

Capital can move freely across borders. It's time people could, too.

You jerk it to Lou Dobbs' shows, don't you?

Other that that, most of what you've posted is staggeringly free of facts and logic. But you know, carry on, because that's what you do.

That's your thing.

Chertoff actually believes that the Fence will help the environment, and has repeatedly stated that illegal immigrants are more harmful to the environment than the fence.

A wall, that has huge holes, is arranged according to, well, something having to do with only disturbing CERTAIN peoples land...this is a going to work how?
Running it only across a part of the border- again- explain this to me?
In the mean time think of this suggestion- perhaps a huge ditch...or even one so big that it fills with the ocean- like the Gulf of Mexico...that kept any illegal Cuban immigrants from even trying, right? Wait- that didn't work...and was just geography- not something that cost billions of dollars...
Only two plausible theories remain:
1; a dome or force field over the entire country, keep out EVERYONE, keep in our people...UTOPIA!!! This country is perfect after all....of course we don't have the technology or ability, but just as feasible as the current fence plan
2; make this country such a mess that no one would possibly want to live here, much less come here from another country
I'm going to go with the second plan...we are already well on our way there- in fact we have cut illegal immigration from Europe and Australia down to next to nothing, Canada is not much of a problem either...re- elect Bush Sr. for a term, as he is still eligible, and I think we can have the second plan wrapped up in his four year term easily....I love it when a plan comes together...

P.S. this plan (the fence) sounds like an idea my eight year old would have come up with around 2 years ago...he came up with the dome today- I have got to give him credit for that...

I'm figuring this is the Dick Cheney approach: push the illegal migrants into places where the American ruling class can shoot them for sport.

I'll bet Mr. Cheney's Halliburton has a coyote subsidiary (Kellog, Brown, and Human Trafficking?) that gets 20% off the top of all smuggling fees. Plus, another subsidiary that works for ICE trucking all the captured "illegals" back to Mexico. Hey, they probably also own the private prisons that hold the "illegals" while they are processed for deportation.

Smart republicans always cover all of their bases. Money-wise, anyway.

The Bushes do not seem a family overly concerned with the Environment or with the Laws protecting it.

I submitted a news article (which, as a kick in the head to me, was not only not posted, but not even acknowledged, and is the reason I don't bother submitting them anymore) a couple years ago when Florida's then-Governor Jeb Bush flipped off the Federal Courts when he ignored 2 Federal court orders and removed over 200 of the state's waterways from the protected list, allowing the big corporations to dump chemical waste legally into out drinking water throughout the state.

Perhaps it's hereditary.
