Elemental mercury and aluminum combine into an amalgam (same idea as behind dental amalgams, except they are a 40/60% mixture of mercury, and an admixture of powered silver, tin, copper, and zinc).

Mercury in contact with oxidized aluminum doesn't do anything, but if it can get at bare metal the amalgam forms, and reacts vigorously until the supply of mercury is exhausted.

It is addressed on page 21 of the A.I.R. Shipper Training Manual(TM).

Thank you.
Though I'm not sure what amalgam fillings have to do with the topic. Mercury is an element and any alloy mix made with mercury would be considered an amalgam, though typically the term is used to refer to dental fillings.
Dental fillings are typically Mercury, Silver, Tin, and copper, as you said.

But as you've stated, mercury is highly reactive with aluminum. It does not form a (stable) amalgam of any sort.

The link to the AIR Shipper Training Manual is very interesting though. I'll quote for you what I thought was pertinent.

It penetrates the surface of aluminum and
destroys the strength of the metal. Unlike ordinary corrosion such as rusting, this happens very quickly
and even small amounts can destroy the structural integrity of an airplane fuselage or hold floor.

Well, no - it isn't a particularly stable amalgam, but it does qualify as one, and ties into chemistry's history.

It isn't popular anymore for industrial synthesis, but aluminum- mercury amalgam is a dirt-cheap (if not environmentally friendly) and fairly easy to make reduction reagent for organic chemistry. Searching on 'aluminum mercury amalgam' kicks back dozens of citations suggesting it is still used in illicit drug manufacture.

Yes. It does qualify as an amalgam. You are correct in that. I definitely misspoke.
The reaction that is aluminum amalgam is exactly what we are talking about actually, and you even said that. blush
The comparison to a stable amalgam like a dental filling just threw me. Sorry.

Making amalgam from aircraft frames is bad ?
Particularly aircraft that might be flying.
Better ?

the music industry is finally suffering the slow death it deserves

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! biggrin

So long as someone pays the musicians...

yeah that's about all i'm concerned with. it's a bitch to watch the industry rake in the dough and try to squeeze every penny out, but also, it's what bands do for a living. pretty much these days the only way a band will make a dime is if they tour their asses off, ect. nobody thinks about the bands who really do not make that much money, obviously nobody's thinking much of the big bands and artists of the world who have the money to spare, but this is their craft and they should be getting paid for what they do all the same. it's just hard to find a truly fair way of doing this you know?
