Childhood's End was the first sci-fi novel I ever read, but we should remember him not just as a brilliant author, but also a man of enormous practical vision. He was among the first to float the idea of geostationary communications satellites.

I read a lot of his stuff. But that one made me think more than any of the others, for some reason.

I read it in like the 5th grade. I still have nightmares about Overlords.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Still more terrified about the stars winking out of existence without any fuss whatsoever, though.

What was that? Nine Billion Names of God?

Yeah. Creeped the hell out of me.

Most of his stuff was pretty positive. I just took that one to mean that we don't know everything, no matter how much we think we know.

When I was ten my parents gave me a book of collected mystery and horror stories. The first two I read were The Nine Billion names of God and The Rats in the Walls. I didn't sleep right for a day or two.

I'm not sure how that got inserted in a mystery & horror collection.

Meh, it was a reader's digest collection, I'm just glad the story was in there.
