Well, that is that. America is toast. We have decided that living in a police state is better than living in the insecure world of freedom. Our representatives in the Senate have taken it upon themselves to protect us by spying on us. Goodnight, George Orwell, sleep tight.

Yesterday, the Democratic controlled Senate, led by Jay Rockefeller and Harry Reid, passed what can only be described as George Bush’s wet dream. Did I mention this is a Democratic Senate? That must be why this widely disliked president gets whatever he wants. And you can see the uproar in the streets. The media has people whipped into a fury at this outrage of outrages!

Yes, indeed. Yesterday the Senate approved a bill that will forever end any efforts to investigate any illegal spying during the Bush administration. Illegal spying that began before 9/11. It’s over. The lobbyists shoved piles and piles of money at our Congress, and our lawmakers gave the president the greatest gift of all: They retroactively rendered crimes committed by Bush’s illegal spying program totally cool and the stopped any chance of a judicial ruling about the programs legality – stopping all pending lawsuits by Americans against telecoms.

Back in the '70s we tossed Nixon out on his ass for much, much less. This is a new America, one in which when confronted by profound lawbreaking, we endorse it, stop any attempts to investigate it and bring justice to a grinding halt. And the media does their job, explaining to Americans the frightening security measures that are now in place.



The Dodd/Feingold amendment would have removed telecom immunity from the bill, but it lost by a vote of 31-67. That is an asskicking. The reason for it is the 18 Democrats who joined Republicans to defeat the amendment. Their names are Bayh, Inouye, Johnson, Landrieu, McCaskill, Ben Nelson, Bill Nelson, Stabenow, Feinstein, Kohl, Pryor, Rockefeller, Salazar, Carper, Mikulski, Conrad, Webb and Lincoln. Hillary Clinton couldn’t be bothered to show up. Obama voted for.

Many people say that the Democrats don’t have a majority, so they can’t get the bills they want passed. Oh, I guess that is why the Republicans always get what they want passed. Take a look at the majority party.

Democrats -- 31-18

Republicans -- 0-49

Now that is wielding some fucking power. This happens on every bill, it is now a boring story. Meanwhile, our country is being eroded, power taken from the people and given to security forces. Don’t worry that no government in the history of the world has ever given up such powers once it acquired them.

And don’t worry that the bill allows the president to pretty much do whatever the fuck he wants. The Senate only passed a bill that says it is okay if the president decided he didn’t like the law and wanted to make up his own. YES, this is true. They literally passed a surveillance law, which the president is not required to follow. Thankfully, the media is there to make us aware.

The final passage of the bill was actually worse than the vote on immunity. 19 Democrats joined Bush’s Republican horde to vote in favor of warrantless eavesdropping and telecom amnesty. Democrats took incredible steps to protect an amazingly weak president and stop justice in its tracks. They did so because they are corrupt and because the old Democratic Party is deceased. These people are right wing nuts. No one else would do such a thing.

The battle isn’t between Democrats and Republicans, it is between Democrats and Democrats. And one side is losing, badly. Thankfully, our media, which relies on advertisers like AT&T, is here to warn us of the potential dangers we face.

Indeed. Let us all worry about the trouble Roger, ex-baseball player, is in, because it seems so very dire.

Is it okay if we'd already done that? I mean, the verb tense in your ultimatum is pretty clear.

As a DC resident, I have no senator. Taxation without representation and all that.

But this disgusts me as well.

I was thinking recently about the erosion of the constitution. As adults who remember days gone by we are aware of, and outraged by, the actions of the president and the congress. We write letters, we bitch, we post on our blogs.

BUT, our children won't remember. All they will know is this. They won't write letters, won't bitch, won't post on their blogs. They'll have nothing to compare it to. My daughter has been getting searched at airports since she was two. It's the norm for her.

When our generation passes, then their work will be complete. America won't be our America anymore.

I'll only have to live in this country for another 30 or so years. I know that by the time I get old enough to need social security and medicare/medicaid and all that, it won't be there for me. (What's the rub, I haven't had regular health benefits for pretty much my entire life!) The kids that are growing up today won't even remember what democracy smelled like, 401kboy's right...

Obama did vote in support of the Dodd-Feingold amendment. Not sure where FTR is getting that 18 number, 17 Democrats and one McCain ticket wannabe named Lieberman voted against the amendment.



Regardless, it's up to the House now to stand firm. Call, write or at least e-mail your representatives.

In related news, I will never vote for Feinstein again.

I kept hearing the Roger Clemens bullshit on NPR yesterday, and I was wondering two things: who is Roger Clemens, and why is he dominating my news?

I heard about the telecom bill on NPR yesterday, it got passed sometime in the afternoon. I actually yelled when I heard the news.

I must've been working when they reported it, 'cuz on my way there it was Roger Clemens, and on my way home it was Roger Clemens.

Either that, or it was reported when I got disgusted with hearing about Clemens and popped in a Bob Marley CD.

It makes good cover news so that real news items don't get out.

I would like to see someone come by a week from now and mention this on the news and see what happens.

KUNGFOO, the link you offered to call House reps has a suggested message at the bottom that is hard to do on the phone, for me at least, without sounding like I was reading from a cue card. I just named the bill, said what I was opposed to and said that I was her constituant. They asked me what my zipcode was, and that was it.

That's perfectly fine. A lot of groups put up that info because most people have no experience in dealing with their elected officials and fear they won't know how to communicate properly with them (the product of the use of intimidation in politics). It just gives people the reassurance they can talk like a normal human to their representatives (or at the very worse, a cue card).

It occurred to me yesterday that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Chicago 1968 Democratic Convention events. I think that we ought to stage a historical re-enactment of those mass street protests when the 2008 Dem Convention comes to Denver (West Coast HQ for NWO operations, FYI) this August. It would make a fine patriotic display. Be the best thing since Seattle WTO 1999.
