Published in the journal Nature Medicine, the results of a team of US scientists’ stem cell research have created a pitter-patter* of excitement among the medical community.

[They] used a process called decellularization to wash away existing cells from the hearts of dead rats while leaving the basic collagen structure intact.

They injected this gelatin-like scaffold with heart cells from newborn rats, fed them a nutrient-rich solution and left them in the lab to grow.

Four days later, the hearts started to contract.
…
Eight days later, the hearts started to pump.

You’re goddamn right; they brought a heart back from the dead. The process is already used to create small amounts of heart tissue and blood vessels. A whole heart seemed like the logical next step.

At some point in the future, the researchers hope that this method will be used to create new, healthy organs from the stripped organ “scaffolds” of pigs or human cadavers. Using cells from the recipient’s own body in order to reduce the rate of rejection, they could craft a new organ and transplant it instead of waiting for a suitable donor.

Go ahead and hurry up on that, guys.

* Bad pun: accomplished.

punk does have a slight fear of rat zombies.

They did this a couple of years ago with a dog. He was only dead for a few hours though.

Please I have ridden the NYC subway system, you guys already HAVE super rats, I'm surprised they don't mug people at knife point with their prehensile blade wielding tails for cheese at this point.

Do you have a link? I've only ever heard that a dog was brought back after being fully drained of blood and cryogenically preserved for a few hours.

Additionally, the article does not state that the animals were brought back to life; merely that new heart cells could be used to regenerate an organ.

Yeah, that was the one. I don't have a link though, I had read it in the NY Post.

Aside from the OMG, WTF factor, this could be pretty cool.

But then again, the likelihood that this organ regrowing procedure will be ready for use in the next twenty years seems slim.

I don't think there was any animal re-animation in this case.
Just the heart, and even that was completely rebuilt. Like a 37 Ford stripped to the frame.
The heart was stripped down collagenic structure and implanted with fresh cells, which then grew in a lab, presumably in a solution or petri dish, and when adequately grown performed their normal function as heart muscles.

Sounds fascinating.

Okay, lovely. Yes, science is amazing. We know this. But some things should just be left alone. Like the dead.

Kindle will be re-reading her copy of the "The Zombie Survival Guide" just in case. There will probably be a new spot for it under her pillow, too.
