Although I agree with you about 80% of the time, shuck and jive has lost most of it's past social context, and is often used synonomously with other phrases like bob and weave, pull a fast one, etc....

...not anywhere I've ever been.

You've not been to too many places, then? I've heard it in common parlance in both rural and urban centers in at least three states.

However, having said that, I disagree that it was innocuous. As ardour noted above, it's code that tells one part of the audience one thing, while it's telling another part a different thing.

In other words, it should not have been used, but the skeptic in me thinks it is along the lines of saying "rule of thumb" a la "Boondock Saints."

Well, "shuck and jive" is clearly some kind of regional etymological ceolocanth, then.

I'm suddenly reminded of Randall's big running joke in "Clerks II." Interestingly, in talking about that movie (and that scene(s) particularly) I have found a lot of people I know whose grandparents used the phrase from the movie in a non-racial manner, e.g. telling a group of children to get off of the porch and do something.

*shrug* Language is super-weird. I'm going to go ahead and re-state that I think Cuomo shouldn't have said it, and anybody past a certain point in a political career should have been handled well enough to know what you can't say and why.

I think that pretty much everyone can agree, only those who are directly insulted by a racial slur, in this case black people, can say if anything has lost it´s impact.

That's a valid argument. But I think it could also be that some white folks aren't aware of it and make such comments unintentionally.

Of course that would imply ignorance as well as insensitivity ...

Ignorance is when you graciously and sincerely apologize for unintentionally giving an offense which you didn't understand was an offense.

Insensitivity is when you just say "What? What's the big deal? I shouldn't have to walk on eggshells, man."

Silly Chris Matthews, it's Anne Coulter who only has a career because of Bill Clinton's fuck ups.

I really think Chris Matthews is drunk about 90% of the time he's on the air. Why's he always slobbering over everything and drooling?

It's times like these that I'm glad I don't have cable or satalite. I am well hidden from the oinker.

Actually, I canceled my cable subscription months ago, and I don't miss it at all. I do watch the occasional MSNBC.com clip, or I happen to catch MSNBC during work. MSNBC is acutally the best cable news network, but that's not saying much in this world of junk food media.

Chris Matthews has about as much credibilty as Howard Stern or Imus. He is a very biased shock jock and although I love it when he is unabashedly pro-Obama, he has said horribly unprofessional things that should cost him his credentials.

Chris Matthews' mind may turn to shit when the female sex is involved, but let's give the guy, at least, some credit where credit is due. I won't lower him to the level of Howard Stern or Don Imus.

Though I would say any freshmen-level political science professor is more creditable than Chris Matthews.

It's all about perspectives.

I was totally ignorant of that. I really had no idea "shuck and jive" had any sort of racial connotations what so ever. I always understood it to refer to dodging, blows or responsibilities, but never in a racial context.
Glad to pick up on that. It's not like I've been throwing the phrase around, but ah, where's that More You Know banner ?

So, was the first Asshole Fuckface a Spaniard named Tomas de Torquemada, an inventor and scientist named Fritz Haber, aka the "father of chemical warfare", or Gilles de Rais, a nobleman and soldier who lived during the 1400s?

When citing the etymology of an expression a good rule of thumb is to avoid a reference like "Yahoo! Answers." The page cited has one vote and the expertise behind the definition is "I teach some African-American Studies courses." Next time please look to page 1281 of Cassell's Dictionary of Slang or page 943 of the Dictionary of American Regional English. I hope that all will be niggardly in their criticisms.

Of course, those are bare bones definitions, not origins of the phrase.

According to the 1994 book %u2018Juba to Jive, a Dictionary of African-American Slang,%u2019 the phrase %u2018shuck and jive%u2019 dates back to the 1870s and was an %u2018originally southern 'Negro' expression for clowning, lying, pretense.%u2019"

Source.

In such matters, perception is everything and etymology nowhere.

The first asshole fuckface is actually very hard to place, as are #2 through 3,650...this is actually related to how we discovered the gregorian year...and the phenomena known as a leap year...this is when all of the asshole fuckfaces are supposed to leap to their death somewhere off the of the coast of France...this was supposed to be a day of celebration...many escaped at that time due to a random meteorite somewhere around Siberia...and have been escaping since....they are loose, and cannot be contained....and they seem to concentrate on leap years and election years to come out in force...they can come in the guise of anything- a democrat- a demon r%^n p#$%l, you just never know...
