But we weren't talking about who has the 'right', just the reality that if you are new your opinion won't be taken into consideration as much. That and how you phrase yourself is critical to whether people disregard your opinion altogether. I don't see how 'rights' got into this debate.

You are correct - my statment was loose, tossed out quickly before logging off, and was intended more to preface the I Ching quote than finely pinpoint the nature of debate.

Some of the friction recently in this thread, it seems to me, comes from people focusing on the pejorative connotation of newb. I hope it is more true that it's the gaffes you make by being a newb and misapprehending local culture, rather than newbness per se, which is what pisses people off about newbs (as was conveyed in a rather high handed fashion a page back). But, fuck it, you gotta make those mistakes in order to get the corrections you need to learn to not be a newb (at least if you buy participant-observer theory) - hence my response (which I must admit was partly inspired by a desire to see how many vaguely appropriate I Ching references I could throw down across different internet communities) was a shot at the use of newbness as a pejorative.

But there is a difference between "shut up, stupid noob," and "We order Murphy's around here, not Guinness, stupid fecking noob, so shut it" and I failed to convey the shades of meaning between them.

Its nice to see another conservative on here. It seems to me at least that SG is skewed towards the liberal minded. But then again, I kind of expect liberal views here b/c tattooing and the like is a more socially liberal lifestyle. It does seem that there is a lot more republican bashing than anything though. I will readily admit that the GOP debates have been like "watching a bunch of monkey hump a football," but I can't believe some of the ideas the democrats have for solving our problems.

Getting back on topic...I think one major reason that the Islamic terrorists hate us is that we pretty much pulled eminent domain and told them they needed to get out so we could give Israel land.

Actually, I was pretty shocked today when I heard Bush advocating a two state solution, and how Palestinians needed their own country with their own government. Surely he doesn't mean Hamas, but still. That's a big step for Bushy boy. Maybe the fact that he doesn't have to pander to the crazies anymore is making him a bit more rational.

When you say we, do you mean the US? I thought it was a union of several western powers. Plus I'm going to assuming you're referring to when the Palestinians were booted from their ancestral homes and Israel became a state way back in the day? The destruction of Palestine and the creation of Israel in it's place is one of the main reasons, but eminent domain is a term for taking land for public use when it's in the interest of the public. Like seizing an abandoned or rundown house and building a new one in it's place to keep out squaters and bring in fresh interest to the area. It's a nitpick difference, I admit, I just wanted to put it out there.

I'd have thought the billions of dollars per year the US gives Israel for weapons would have more to do with it.

Indeed, I was pleasantly surprised to hear him say something so sensible. Shame it's taken him seven years to get round to it, but still.

Meh. I genuinely don't believe he would have said it if he honestly believed he'd be held to it.

Though it does signify a rift with the radical Christian Zionist lobby, so that's something positive, I suppose.

yeah, i know the definition of eminent domain, but if you think of the basic definition its pretty similar to what happened. The same thing happened with the native americans here.

Bush is kinda like my boss. tells you he's going to do something, but doesn't get around to it until its too late to do any good.
i can see Huckabee being similar to Bush in that he would rely on his beliefs moreso than that of his more educated advisors.

Guiliani and Thompson have both been exposed as horrible candidates .. Thompson is better as a fake gov't official in movies and Guiliani is an asshole, this is okay as a mayor but insane to have as a President ...

Eminent domain is the seizing of private lands for the public good. That's the basic idea behind it, and I think that the comparison right there to the Palestinians being kicked out of their homeland is offensive and simplistically flawed.

But I do agree that the Zionism's excuses sound similar to Manifest Destiny, which is probably the comparison you were going for.

Don't think you have to worry about another Republican president this cycle. There is no one there. The Dems don't have to win 'cause the GOP already lost. I'm a conservative by any measure, but I'm still voting for Obama. There's no one else I can stand to listen to. Hilary sounds like Falwell to me, and that's as disgusting as it gets puke in my book. Dems don't worry, be happy. You got it made already.

I'd agree, if McCain loses the primary. McCain wins a lot of independant voters and that' s partly the base Obama needs. I mean, there are a lot of factors, but McCain could win '08 in a hotly fought race.

I'm just an observer here, but I hear that the Dems have repeatedly been overwhelmed by their own awesomeness, to the point of losing. Have I been misinformed?
