Why aren't the primaries all held on the same day, just like the general election? The fact that ANY state gets to go before any other seems to negate or at least lessen the impact of those with a later voting date.

The general elections are mandated by the Constitution, which failed to predict (and indeed rather lamely attempted to discourage) the rise of the party system. It therefore made no provisions for the nomination of presidential candidates, and as a result, the nomination processs evolved without any federal control or guidance, as a negotiated, haphazard arrangement between parties and local governments.

In short, for no reason.

Exactly. I am generally amazed at the foresight of the authors of the Constitution, and then puzzled that they failed to see other things. I'd like to see a revamping of some of our political processes. But that seems almost impossible now with these yahoos firmly entrenched. Term limits? Probably not, since they're the ones who vote on it. It'd be nice if we could get some sort of national referendum. I'll stop now before my heart explodes.

Yes indeed. Which means we have to fix them the hard way, I guess. But virtually no one gives a shit, so... Edward Gibbons wrote in his "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" that Rome fell because of the lack of civic virtue of its citizens. Perhaps someone will say the same about us.

Almost certainly. Remember, Iraq was the world's premier superpower three thousand years ago. Its main rival was Egypt. No empire lasts forever.

Senator Hillary Clinton : 29.54%

Almost done.

Sad little all white hick Iowa prefers a minority candidate...and little old white trailer park trash me was there supporting him...go figure.... smile
My main objection to this whole piece was the fact that it seemed like a low blow to Iowa...I hate living here and hate this state- but you shouldn't just go out and characterize a place or a people a certain way...that is called prejudice ...and some of the pokes and prods from this article were just sad...and the following "Fuck Obama" article was just juvenile...

Did you even go to a caucus? Don't answer here though. Just answer that for yourself.

Because you should realize how petty you are being.

Yes, I did...my problem is with the characterization FTR is making of Iowa, which, in my opinion, is incorrect...

Get over yourself. Seriously. Congrats on not looking like retards. Big victory. The only low blow thrown at Iowa was about their history of picking shitty candidates for the Dems and the fact that there is no reason for Iowa to be first.

If Iowa wants to be first then some of you might want to grow a thicker skin.

1: as far as I am concerned, as I had stated earlier, I could care less about Iowa being first.
2:You have essentially stated that Iowa is a group of white farmers, and hicks...that is a prejudiced stereotype if I have ever heard one, and one that runs very much to the contrary of what I see in Des Moines... or growing up in Iowa City...
There are rural parts of Iowa just as you describe- but there are rural areas in New York state, as well as in California...
By saying, in essence, that I live in Iowa, so I must be a white hick farmer, is very insulting, and untrue...
Thicker skin, indeed...

Iowa's primary industry is agriculture. It consists mostly of flat farmland sparsely dotted with small towns and farms. There are a handful of larger metro areas, of which the largest, Des Moines, is still relatively small and you can find farmland right outside the city limits. So yes, it's a rural state.

I am originally from Iowa and most of my family still lives there, these days primarily in Des Moines. It's not a big city. It doesn't feel like one, either.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. Essentially, anyone eligible should be able to run. Usually I guess, there will be certain criteria to be met, like coming up with a certain number of signed supporters, just to make sure only serious candidates are in the race. But those are simply formalities. If political parties insist of supporting just one candidate, then that, and how they come up with one should be entirely their own business. So I can't see where the Constitution would come in.

Well, we are officially in the shit. The Iowa Caucus will be held on Thursday. A bunch of Midwesterners will be allowed, for no apparent reason, to have a huge impact on the Republican and Democratic choices for president again. And the rest of the country will have to deal with their ignorant choice for months.

Saying before we had even had the caucus that we were going to make an ignorant choice is pretty inflammatory, no way around that...almost could be taken as calling us as midwesterners or Iowans ignorant...so sorry, no more apologies from me on this thread...we'll have to wait until I say something ignorant on a comment down the road for that....

Huh. Still not "hicks" though is it? Pretty far from it, I would say. Actually maybe more of a response to the generous gift of called George W. Bush.

First off WTF does that line mean?
And I don't quite see what I twisted into any kind of class statement...rural, maybe, though I don't consider Iowa that rural anymore....
Calling Iowans ignorant...you will have to be pretty quick with words to deny that one....
I will openly admit to taking things out of context from comments as opposed to your article during parts of this discussion...but you said what you said...that first paragraph was just insulting
