Ok, its been 6 days since the article. the caucus is over. and i was thinking about the statistics provided on the racial makeup of Iowa. First off, Iowa has a damn small population. it has hovered just under 3 million people since the state was accepted into the union. that makes each percentage point count for more than in larger populated states. Also, Iowa accepted a large number of Bosnian refugees from the conflict there. these people show up as *gasp* white on polls. so do people of Croatian descent, as well as several other ethnic groups present in Iowa. When most people say white, they think of the average american white person who has been here for more than a couple generations. they do not automatically think of these other groups. Statistics can be completely accurate, and still lie. It happens all the time. yes, Iowa does not have a large population percentage of non whites, but given the smaller population, and the generalization of the term white, the statistics are skewed. I conclude that before you say you know somthing about someplace, dont just research statistics, visit the place, become familiar. Oh, and also, be more mature in your responses to people, yea, i got mad, but you made inflammatory remarks. people respond to you with polite replies and you attack like a tyrannical child who is not getting their way. grow up.

So, let me get this straight: You are saying people from Bosnia and Croatia are not white? Good argument.
And just so you know, I've spent time in Iowa. I've been in every "major city" in Iowa as well as much of the rural areas. I've visited every state in the nation and Iowa is as white as it gets. Sorry, sport.
Well, we are officially in the shit. The Iowa Caucus will be held on Thursday. A bunch of Midwesterners will be allowed, for no apparent reason, to have a huge impact on the Republican and Democratic choices for president again. And the rest of the country will have to deal with their ignorant choice for months.
Saying before we had even had the caucus that we were going to make an ignorant choice is pretty inflammatory, no way around that...almost could be taken as calling us as midwesterners or Iowans ignorant...so sorry, no more apologies from me on this thread...we'll have to wait until I say something ignorant on a comment down the road for that....
Huh. Still not "hicks" though is it? Pretty far from it, I would say. Actually maybe more of a response to the generous gift of called George W. Bush.
What I said and you're twisting in into some sort of rural or class based bashing is bullshit and you know it.
Actually maybe more of a response to the generous gift of called George W. Bush.
First off WTF does that line mean?
And I don't quite see what I twisted into any kind of class statement...rural, maybe, though I don't consider Iowa that rural anymore....
Calling Iowans ignorant...you will have to be pretty quick with words to deny that one....
I will openly admit to taking things out of context from comments as opposed to your article during parts of this discussion...but you said what you said...that first paragraph was just insulting
An "ignorant choice" is not the same thing as calling people ignorant. I make ignorant choices, everyone does. Pick up a book, you need some basic English understanding.

This is getting a bit silly- splitting hairs, even...and you never did explain the Bush statement.

If I were to call your writing ignorant, would I not in fact be calling, or at least inferring you as, in fact, ignorant?
What would basic English understanding consist of-a cup of tea perhaps?

Now, I'm no Master Englishist, but I think what he meant is that you're operating on a meaning of "ignorant" that is not applicable here. There's really no hair-splitting. Extremely intelligent people can still make ignorant choices. Those choices are said to be uninformed or misinformed.
That "cup of tea" quip sucked massive ass, by the way.
(ps - while you're reviewing "ignorant," brush up on "infer," too. At best, the sentence where it appeared was sloppy, at worst you meant "imply.")

As long as this thread has long descended into semantic nonsense, here's some semantic nonsense that actually Primary related which I found amusing.
While the Democrats, like the GOP, are holding a primary in Michigan today, it's not receiving near as much attention because it essentially won't count, as the DNC stripped the state of its delegates for jumping ahead in the primary schedule against party rules. Clinton is still on the ballot, but Edwards, Obama and all the other previous candidates withdrew their names in accordance with the Party's decisions.
Except Dennis Kucinich is still listed there too. At first I thought this must be some plucky protest against the establishment by the always fiery Kucinich.
Nope. It turns out he did try to withdraw his name, but he's so terrible at running for president that he fucked up and filed the wrong paperwork, and thus was unable to get himself off the ballot.
I gotta say, I'm pleased Romney won tonight and will be sticking around the GOP race. It would be great if Guiliani won Florida and Ron Paul took enough votes in NV to keep him afloat. I just hate to say goodbye to any of these xenophobic, racist, war-mongering old boys! Seriously, someone get these knuckleheads a sitcom together!
Incidentally, lost in the shuffle of the ever present "is it sexist to call her Hillary?" debate is the odd fact that Ron Paul seems always to be addressed by his full name: 'Ron Paul,' never 'Paul,' or 'Ron.' In this sense he is like rocker Tommy Lee, who is not only identified by the full 'Tommy Lee,' but specifically as rocker Tommy Lee.
