Didn't Firefox develop from the minds of Netscape developers? Thought I read a blurb that they started Mozilla after the AOL take over or went over to Mozilla after the buyout.
Yeah, it uses the same rendering engine as Netscape did: Gecko. If I remember things correctly, they started Firefox at Netscape but AOL ditched it, whereupon the boys and girls founded Mozilla and took Firefox open-source.
Mozilla was the codename for Netscape Navigator. When Netscape went open source in 97/98 (I forget) the ensuing project was called Mozilla.
Fed up with the bloat of Mozilla, Dave Hyatt and some 15 year old kid from Gulliver Prep (a high school near where I used to live in Miami) released Phoenix, a super lean browser based on the same rendering engine.
Eventually Phoenix became Firebird, Firebird became Firefox, and it overshadowed the Mozilla project. Meanwhile Apple hired Dave Hyatt and soon after Safari came out.

I remember when IE and Netscape were the Big Two, and I'd spend fucking hours writing poor HTML and JavaScript in order to compensate for the two browser's inability to render identical code in any way that looked the same.
OH GOD. Remember the days of IE-only and NS-only sites? JavaScript browser detect and redirect, FTW!
You can thank Jeffrey Zeldman for the end of that nonsense.
Sigh. IE5 for Mac was one of the best browser ever made, it was years ahead of its time, and if Microsoft had used its Tasman rendering engine for Windows we wouldn't have to deal with the stupid shit we do today.

While we're talking Netscape history, I feel like we should mention the steaming pile that Mozilla Gecko started out as. Netscape 6 (first gecko browser) was a frustrating embarrassment that all but killed the Netscape browser. It had been on life support ever since..
