A plea has gone up on a website dedicated to the rental of a blimp to promote the presidential hopes of limited-government candidate Ron Paul (R-Tex).

The statement reads:

"We must receive $200,000 in sponsorships by midnight on Friday for the blimp to be in Boston by December 15th! Please sponsor the Ron Paul Blimp Tour now!"

As of the morning of December 6th, the site stated it had received $119,775 in donations plus $5,500 in wire transfer purchases. While $125,000 is fairly substantial, at least another $75,000 must be raised if the private project is to meet its goals.

This is a far cry from the $400,000 plus that had supposedly been pledged for the blimp, much of which has not yet been collected and is thought now to be questionable at best.

There are even Internet reports that the project come under sustained attack by those wishing to inflate the totals with an eye toward damaging its credibility. Some of the e-mails addresses reveal derogatory sentiments, according to sources, but it was presumed several days ago that the majority of pledges were sound.

So once again it looks like the election is the Democrats to lose. But it was last time too... and they did. I still say John Kerry's Democratic nomination was a Repulican plot!

I hope they don't throw it away again. Not that Demos are inherently better than Repubs... but they are more likely to try to reverse the damage Bush and Cheney have caused.

But... regardless, I still don't see anyone running on either side that's strong enough to fix what this administration has broken.

Donkey, the campaign is not renting a blimp, a private party is attempting to raise 300,000 to rent a Blimp, and have Ron Pauls slogan painted on it, then fly it around the early primary states.
I don't think Ron Pauls campaign pulls the strings on every guy with a hand painted sign or bumper sticker.

Now all he's got to deal with is the whole 'completely deranged' and 'preposterous fruitcake' obstacles, and it's smooth sailing!

What appears as "damage" to the left is really nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. All of these "issues" will run their course during the primary and the general election will have a different look and feel and be more - but not exclusively - focused on more substanitive issues.

Moreover, it is important to note that Clinton, Obama, and Edwards are facing their own tempest.

The Huckabee rise in the polls is due to a concentration of interest from the loony religious right. That won't hold. In the end, the Republicans will probably end up with a Mitt / Rudy ticket.

One last thing:

Isn't one of the lessons learned from the Clinton years was that the sex life of a politician is off limits? How many politicians and columnists on the left spent years telling us that it didn't matter? As for using tax dollars and city employees to support an affair, I think it is fair to say that Clinton set the bar for that type of behavior.

Were you complaining about any of that at the time? Or are you being intellectually dishonest?

What "liberals" and Democratic voters think of Guiliani banging his mistress on the tax payers dime, letting her and her friends use the NYPD as a taxi service, then hiding the expense trail, is not really relevant since they aren't the ones voting the GOP primary.

While all these issues are rather big, they're still probably not all that important to a lot of Republican voters. They're watching those ads and agreeing with them. Then they're glossing over everything else. That's just how it works. I mean, look at what they ignored in the last election because some dudes kissing was just too much.

It's not like it doesn't do ANY damage, don't get me wrong, but it's nearly as big as it should be.

I didn't really follow your posts too much the last time around, and never really formed an opinion on you. I was put under the impression that you were being a cry baby/ drama queen. It's not being disproven.

It is totally relevant given that the precedent has been set by Clinton (both in Little Rock and D.C.).

The argument being set forth in your article is that Rudy's campaign has been damaged by the revelations surrounding his extra-marital affair.

The same revelations were made about Clinton on numerous occassions, including the inappropriate use of tax dollars and government employees. However, the media establishment, the Democratic party, and those that supported Clinton spent millions of dollars advocating the notion that all of this didn't matter.

So, it either mattered where Clinton was concerned - and matters for Rudy - or it doesn't matter at all. The establishment on the left clearly argued that it doesn't matter at all.

So, to slam Rudy for his actions is intellectually dishonest - perhaps not for you FTR - but for everyone else who suddenly finds themselves waving from this bandwagon.

Most importantly, this operatic nonsense will have no relevance once the general election rolls around. The American people aren't dumb enough to be distracted from focusing on the real issues.
