Even though I was only six years old when it came out, I still remember Ghostbusters with fond giggles. That movie was hysterical, man. Ghostbusters 2 sucked butt, what with its crappy-ass "can't we all just get along" public-service-announcement-esque message, but the first one was classic. You know what I loved about that movie, most of all? The fact that it was AWESOME. I played with my share of slime in the 80s, and while I was a big fan of slime, a video game would have be cooler.
Well whoop-di-doo! My prayers have been answered! A Ghostbusters video game is set to slime you in 2008. Dan Akroyd wrote it, and Harold Ramis and Bill Murray are joining him to record the voice-overs.
Set on the streets of Manhattan, the game includes spooks and ghouls from the films. It includes the famous Who You Gonna Call? theme tune and gives players the chance to act out being a Ghostbuster themselves.
Dan Ackroyd said the computer game was essentially the third Ghostbusters film, adding: "And it's better than the third movie because it lasts longer, there's more development of the characters."
He said the new game was set in 1991 when the characters are running a more successful business.
"These characters are now older, more experienced, perhaps a little more jaded, more tough, with maybe not as compassionate a view of the spirits that they used to have," he said.
Radicool. That stupid article doesn't mention Ernie Hudson, but he has apparently signed on as well, according to Kotaku.
In addition to the three original Ghostbusters—Ramis, Aykroyd and Murray—Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddmore in both films, and William Atherton, famous for his role as Water Peck.
Yippee. Kotaku also pointed me to G4, where there's some exclusive gameplay footage for your viewing pleasure. My only complaint is that I won't be able to play the game on my Atari 2600, but all of you Xbox/PlayStation/Wii types will be set.
HOLY SHIT!
This sounds rad.
I'm glad Ernie Hudson seems to be signed on as well.
That guy rules.
And it's written by Dan Akroyd! That is awesome.
That guy has done NOTHING good for years, correct?
lemme just flip up my sun visor, lace my neon shoe strings on my converse all stars, and wait for my shirt to turn back to it's indoor color and i'm all set to play!
It's strange that they talk about it taking place after the second movie but all the gameplay footage looked like scenes from the first. Still, if it comes out for the wii, it's mine. Can you imagine the cool if they had a special proton pack accessory?

um, there were several a ghostbusters games released at the time of the film.
that said, if memory serves the C64 & Spectrum versions weren't all that, and based on the gameplay footage you've linked?
that looks cool...
No way, the C64 version was awesome. God, I played that so much. Probably worth tracking down an emulator and a ROM if you have any interest in vintage gaming.
I don't tend to really like these games that are trying to be sequels to movies. By their very nature, games don't mesh well with movies if you're trying to tell a strong narative (because most movies aren't multiple endless levels of shooting random guys). I mean, there are exceptions... and there are good games with great stories, but they're not usually continuing a film franchise. The stories are normally half decent, but filled with rehashes trying to create scenes from the earlier movies.
Based on past returns, I'd say it'd be better to just make an adaptation of of the movies and leave the all new story line that's supposedly "essentially the third Ghostbusters film" for an actual film.
I remember spending countless hours with the crap that was the Ghostbusters game on the NES. It looked like crap, played like crap, and was a crap game. Did it matter? Not at all because it was the only Ghostbusters game out for the NES at the time. The Genesis version was alright but still nothing to write home about. I have waited nearly 20 years for a good Ghostbusters game and it looks like is there finally one coming out. I just wish that they would specify whether or not this will be a sequel to the movie or if it will be a game. I would rather have this be a game based on the movie and they do a new movie. Billy Murray already said that he won't do a live action Ghostbusters though, I would settle with CGI. It would be nice if the game was a deeper story than the movie but they still came out with the movie. I guess we won't know until they clear some things up later down the line as it sometimes sounds like this game is going to be the third movie and other times it sounds like this game will go hand-in-hand with the third movie.
I always find that games based on movies have great graphics which you can relate to after seeing the movies, but the gamepley is never any good. It always tends to be rushed.
Last I heard there was also a rumor of there being a third film. Though it would be an animated movie. Apparently it was the only way Bill Murray would get on board for it.
This "the computer game was essentially the third Ghostbusters film" made me think of this "Take the average screenwriterwho doesn't play RPGs, place him in front of the writing tool from Neverwinter Nights and you'll get a linear story with a complete lack of
Player agency and no interesting decisions. Just trying to explain the concept behind writing without a protagonist to someone who has never even been a dungeon master can be like showing card tricks to a dog."
A game should be written like a game, not like a movie and I have no reason to believe Dan Akroyd has the faintest clue how to write a game plot. More likely than not, it will be some mildly amusing mini-games strung together by FMV.
