I never said child support was a handout; any woman that is intentionally marrying-getting pregnant-getting divorced to collect checks isn't going after poor men either. They're going after men that make a lot of money because the checks are based off a percent of his past annual income, and that doesn't include extra expenses like medical/education. Of course these checks are deserved if a single parent must raise a child by himself/herself; I never said otherwise. However just because you think there must not be many heinous people taking advantage of the system/other people, and this goes for professional panhandlers organizing allotted time on a corner instead of getting a job*1, doesn't mean the problem ought to be wholly ignored. If you're going to use that line of thinking, you might as well ignore all other problematic minorities like sex offenders because not enough of them live in your neighborhood to be of any concern to you.

What, exactly, do you think should be done about the anecdotal number of women who continually marry, become impregnated by, and then divorce wealthy men in order to cash in on that lucrative child support racket?

How many of these fertile femme fatales do you think there are, as opposed to single parents who are entitled to child support but are unable to collect because the biological father refuses to pay?

Okay, so we can chalk up those many blank posts to either my incompetence, IE7, or my theory that the SG minions are testing my willingness to continue sending them checks.

I tried to say...
Is there a definition for the attempt, or a style of debate, which exploits an insignificant number of exceptions to the rule to form the basis for an entire opine?

What do we call this disease: bigotry, prejudice, intolerance, ignorance, dishonesty, conservatism, irrationality?

I'm sure someone will vote that we simply chalk this up to hasty generalizaton or unrepresentative sample, but I think it may be some kind of disease.

See, now that's actually thoughtful. I'm sad I missed it the first time.

I don't know if there's a technical rhetorical term or not, though one of the lawyers might. But it seems to me that it's done principally in order to reinforce a preexisting prejudice (e.g., that immigrants, welfare queens, and socialized medicine are going to take your money away), and does not itself thereby comprise a failure in its own right beyond fallacious reasoning.

Granted, fallacious reasoning may lead someone to that prejudice in the first place, but that's a chicken-and-egg argument.

go ask a nurse in the baby ward at your local hospital if you don't believe me. Otherwise, keep on eating your blue pills and be ignorant.

edit: I hope Bitch PhD writes an article on this.

YOu better hope she doesn't... I seriously doubt you'll like what she has to say.

I took you up on your offer/challenge, whatever it was, and asked both my mother-in-law and my best friend's mother (both of whom are nurses in maternity wards at different hospitals). My MIL laughed until she almost cried, and my best friend's mom advised me to stay away from any pills you offered.

Or both? Wait now, she did say "the" at some point, and that didn't offend me...

I must say, I am completely astonished at what this thread turned into. It was kinda funny at first, but once it got to the point that I realized she was actually serious, it took the fun out of it and replaced it with the scary. Happy Hallowe'en?

grrowler please line up with the jury and mother from this case and leave Florida.
I'm glad other people have responded because what a nurse says/experiences is not the same thing as actual research.

I don't mean to be off topic but since this thread keeps surfacing I might as well comment. I don't actually think anyone will vote for Ron Paul. Not because he's racist, but because everyone's going to vote for Hillary Clinton, Obama, or Giuliani.

On the contrary. I'm assuming the Religious Right is serious and will back a tertiary man. If this becomes a four-way race, it might actually end up being interesting, since you'll have double the chance of vote-drain and the two main-party candidates might actually have to tell us something interesting instead of echo-chamber poll response rhetoric.
