#1: Not a proper noun. Possibly this is why you had to change your name from MisterLinguist?

#2: Why not make a thread bout the thing you object to, rather than bumping a five year old tangentially relevant thread with a teensy tiny paragraph. Possibly you'd have to spend a little more time considering your argument, and a little less time talking nonsense bout your hammer, but I think we could live with the lack.

not that you will read this, but if you want to discuss it, find a relevant news article and start a new thread. or better yet, use your blog.

So rather than choosing to ignore an extraneous post, you add to it with another extraneous post. Furthermore, isn't the search function there precisely so that one may find a related topic, rather than starting a new thread. Or is this some sort of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" bullshit.

We've already had this converstion. Use the search function.

Less flippantly, I think if you have to add to a discussion after five years beyond "bump, this sure does still suck', possibly you should consider making a more worthwhile contribution.

The search function is great if you plan on reading old threads or commenting on newer ones. commenting in a five-year-old thread is a big no-no.

I'm sorry... I thought it was nOOb 101 that you were to use old threads rather than to create new ones. Maybe things changed while I was on hiatus... but it was never a no-no to bump old threads before.

This said, bumping just to bump is rather bizarre and I agree that his post really didn't intend to revive a topic or have an actual discussion.

But to say you can't bump a five year old thread.... well.... that would take away so much fun for us older members!

wink

You're not wrong, you're just a little off on what "old thread" means. It's expected that a user do a search and post in a week-old, even months-old thread, but not a five-year-old thread. That is thread necromancy, not a bump.

In fact, I don't know of any forum where necromancing years-old threads is ever smiled upon.

Actually, it's done fairly regularly on the Silliness Board. But really, isn't it just another reason for people to be snooty? I mean- you're new, you make a new thread, members flame you, etc. AND NOW "thread necromancy" is yet another taboo one must avert. I know you're not a nOOb but neither am I and this is the first I've seen of "thread necromancy" so forgive my ignorance.

I guess I just miss the old days. Oh wait, people were worse then!

Sort of a different set of rules. Silliness is pretty much "anything goes" with the exception of race/gender/sexuality/religious slurs and really, really graphic images. CE is more like most forums.

Obviously, you have not noticed that CE is the new Silliness, Silliness is the new Lifestyle and Lifestyle is deader than Hook-Up!

Seriously? I don't understand why it's so difficult to see the difference between bumping a year old lolcatz thread and a year old "CURRENT events" thread. It's not considered bad to link to it, or reference it, but commenting on something that happened years ago is sort of pointless.

I also find it very hard to believe that you've never heard of thread necromancy.

Well thanks for bumping it again. Perhaps others can learn something valuable from this.

whatever

While I respectfully admit that the guy who bumped this was not doing it to be productive, I have to say that some of the responses are why I left the site for over a year. Personally, while I like to be able to have discussions in a forum more serious than the silliness board, I also acknowledge that this is SG and some seem to take themselves a bit too seriously.

Perhaps someone should lock this so that it won't offend the CE members? It seems to be a bit of a deal for some.

seriously, y'all, this thread is crying out to be returned to the grave from whence it came. how about we show some respect for the dead and just let it die?
