My parents came over to the US in 1971. I was born here. My family definitely had nothing to do with institutionalized slavery. But you know what? Even though it was ended a long time ago and I wasn't around for it, I still benefit from the prosperity this nation built on the back of forced labor. I don't feel guilty about that, but I do believe that it behooves me to honor the memory of those people who worked for my benefit against their will, and to attempt to rectify the continued degradation of their progeny who still suffer from slavery's legacy.
