Dude. Hello? The literacy rate in today's high schools is frightening! It's not just 'do they read,' it's do they comprehend more than 10% of what they read? Are they able to critically analyze or make informed inferences?

Personally, I am also horrified by most of the "AP" students these days. Quite seriously: the average ninth grade AP student is not even capable of doing things that I did in the 6th or 7th grade.

Ugh.

Stopping here before I get on a real off topic rant!!

Shit , why not ask do most adults read today ? I feel pretty safe in saying if that little survey was done where I work the answer would be less then 20% do . Too many folks think of reading as a waste of their time . Sad but true .

One thing that we can never answer about this.....how many of them would have if they possessed the means to?

"99% of Americans never owned Ferrari's" doesn't prove that we are a land that will not tolerate Italian super-car dominance.

That's a very good point.

That in a scant six pages of this thread I'd seen at least four posts saying, almost verbatim:

dopemelody said:
According to some figures, there are over 400 times as many slaves today as there ever were in America. How about instead of complaining about something that no one alive today either did or was subjected to, we take this righteous anger we have and do something about the millions of people being forced into slavery today?

Despite the fact that it's been exposed as a false dilemma every time it's been brought up.

Apparently I'm too subtle. That's something I never would have imagined.

I don't think you're too subtle, I think you just need to clarify more. Are you saying that I should have read the scant six pages before I posted or that if I read I would know better than to present a false dilemma?

I just came across this, and hooooooly shit this thread is on fire.

It is part of history, we can't blot it out and forget it. Some of my ancestors may have owned slaves once; it does worry me, but I like to believe the reason I personally shouldn't feel guilt is because I'm better than that. I like to believe that I am working towards building a better world, a better ideology. Somehow making amends through my deeds rather than spending each day weeping into my pillow.

Slavery is a force for evil, always has been. I'm just curious as to how Medved is saying America is less culpable than anyone else. Please. Britain conquered half the known world in a huge, arrogant colonialist fashion and took tons of slaves. Nobody is hiding that, we've accepted our national historical role in slavery - and it's not a pleasant one. Then again, everybody did. France, Spain...although I won't expand it out of black slavery, so many nations took slaves it's almost embarasing. There's a lot of shit that had to be answered for. But for Medved to say that somehow America is less guilty than anywhere else? That's kind of....crap.

'White Guilt' ......Well....Dunno. I'm not feeling guilty about BEING white, if that's what the term means. It does not mean that I look back in the past and say 'Well, Slavery was a bit of a bad patch, let's forget about it.' though.

Slavery was and is a horrible thing, and there's probably enough guilt to go around. While the US might bear the lion's share, I think we should pass at least some along to all the European nations who supplied us with all those slaves.

Oh, and I've never picked up an economics book in my life

You could probably try something by John Locke; that would fit nicely with the subject of slavery, as he was a shareholder in the Royal African Company.

Read "Second Treatise on Government" by Locke, it's actually very interesting.

Easy.

Because we have a modern manufactured culture based upon enlightenment ideas, like pluralism. The hypocrisy is greater for Americans.

Why would you say that? Everyone knows America is the only racist country in the world. Certainly nations like Australia and Canada have nothing to be ashamed of. Certainly not their treatment of their aboriginal people.
