Oops, I had my pomposity dial set to 11.

I just think that arguing a 'comedian' can't raise serious issues is similar to saying you can't get decent political comment in an online community such as this. Both of which, I think, are wrong.

A Jim Carrey speech, a Rambo film, or an article on Suicide Girls: they all seem equally unlikely conduits for a message which raises the issue of human rights abuses in Burma.

Which is the least trashy? I'd probably go with the Carrey speech.

clap, clap, clap. You win the high school debate.

I'm not attacking your usual articles, which I honestly enjoy, but you're not very good at taking criticism are you. You need to realize that some of these people have a good point. Maybe instead of hypocritically responding with childish remarks you should take it to account.

Anyway, if people are interested in doing something, then instead of worrying about this article, perhaps they should join the Human Rights Action Center:

and the US campaign for Burma:

Thank you for the links.

Yeah, there is a reason that they call it acting. It's 'cause they're like, acting.

I am sick as fuck of this idea that your day job dictates what you can talk about in our culture.

Anyone can take an interest in anything, study anything, become expert in anything. The idea that one has to have "credentials" to speak to something is just fucking stupid - not to mention elitist and self-defeating.

I mean if we used that criteria FTR no one could ever say anything to you but "Shut the fuck up, you, you comic!"

Funny how this turned into a quibble about the way FTR approached the article. I vote for next time to have two articles. We can all make fun of Jim Carey and not feel guilty that we have missed the point that FTR was trying to make.

Seemed to me that FTR was trying to make the point that Jim Carey is a numbnuts who shouldn't be allowed to comment of issues of import.

Seems as tho if the CIA could blow up Oklahoma city and the WTC they could covertly pop an occasional military dictator and spread world democracy the easy way. Also, remember, we haven't done anything about Darfor yet. No oil in Burma either I guess, since they're short on gas.

Okay teach. I re-read it.

It is a great message; I just don't want to hear it from Jim Carrey. First of all, cut the long hair, Greystoke. Secondly, I can't take anything he says seriously. NOTHING. As much as he wants to be taken seriously and hopefully win a meaningless acting statue, he is the world's biggest clown. I think I can sum up why I don't want Jim Carrey to deliver messages about human rights violations with one simple video

Now, you tell me what I am missing.

Jim Carrey's cadence, inflection, and facial features make nearly everything he says sound like he's telling a joke. If you didn't giggle even a little when he said Aung San Suu Kyi, you're made of sterner stuff than I.

Whatever. None of that has any bearing on his being as qualified to deliver the message as anyone else.

Your conflation of his real self with this roles not withstanding. If he were some professor somewhere you would just think he was strange, but because you have seen him in the mask, you want to giggle at him.

Giggle away.

I don't think anyone said he wasn't "qualified". It's more that he comes across as a goofy guy, even when he's trying not to be.

Also, kudos on reading my mind. I'm trying to work on that, but I don't seem to have the knack.

Is it just because the irony is too obvious that no one has commented on the fact that this is a piece about how absurd it is for a comedian to deliver a serious political message. . . written by a comedian working here as a political news writer? Is this whole thread some kind of infinitely regressive ironic metal-loop? surreal

Is it too fucking hard for you idiots to understand it is not about COMEDIANS delivering a message, but rather, a specific comedian who acts like a clown?

There are plenty of comedians who deliver serious political messages. This particular comedian has made his life acting like a complete jack ass. Get it?

Do you? ACTING. It's a job, not a mission.

Do you have any comments about his non-acting behavior that would somehow support your idea that his comments are not to be taken seriously.

Holy God, the preview for John Rambo is bloodier than all of the first three Rambo's put together.

F'real. There was 1 death in First Blood, and it was a guy falling out of a helicopter. Rambo went way the hell out of his way to avoid killing anybody.

Has anybody seen 'Beyond Rangoon?' I haven't seen it since the year it was released, and I was pretty young, but I remember it being a pretty powerful movie about repression in Myanmar.
