Secondly, it allows the believer to cast himself as exceptional, enlightened, privy to a secret wisdom shared by few and reviled by many - not just a morally superior being to his powerful enemies, but also an intellectually superior being to the multitudes of bleating sheep on whose behalf he is called to struggle.

Oh sure, use logic. That'll convince him. whatever

I am not trying to convince him, my Secret Jew-Mason Brother, but merely attempting to embarrass him in front of the multitudes of bleating sheep so that they will not notice how he reveals our secret plans to restore the Empire of Khazaria, ha ha!

Out of those three, I've only seen "The God Who Wasn't There." I liked his fundamental message but thought the video was put together horribly.

Oh, and when he finally showed himself on camera, it threw me for a bit. I had totally pictured someone else.

There are two fundamental flaws I see in conspiracy theories in general.

The first is that history, and simple observation, is enough to show you that humans are simply not that well-organized.

The second is that if these people were really that powerful, why the fuck would they need to keep their actions secret? That doesn't make any kind of sense at all.

Conspiracy theories likewise seem to be seductive - at least to a certain mentality, for a couple of reasons, neither of which are particularly flattering.

For one thing, they offer a childishly simplified moral universe to believe in instead of a complicated and often conflicted moral reality. Instead of seeing the world as inhabited by flawed and often ineffective people generally trying to do the right thing - and frequently coming into irreconciliable conflicts with other more-or-less decent people and other right things - you are allowed to believe instead in a class of omnicompetent but irredeemably evil beings scarcely resembling anything we understand as human that have hijacked our innocence and our decency for their own incomprehensibly yet unquestionably sinister ends.

They can therefore be opposed whole-heartedly, without any trace of empathy for a common humanity. It's a lot like any run-of-the-mill bad religion in this mode.

It's also rather like any run-of-the-mill bad religion in that way, too, I suppose.

Really, I wish these people would satisfy their urge to self-dramatize by playing World of Warcraft or making a cult of NFL football instead of cluttering up a perfectly serviceable internet forum with their pathetic proselytizations, but de gustibus non est disputandum, I suppose.

I'm not really sure how I should take this Zarth, are you suggesting that I have a superiority complex, or that my childlishly simple mind is suceptable to this kind of thing?

It obvious to me after reading your post that I was mistaken, as obviously you are the one in the position of moral superiority. I should probably just do as you say and stick to downloading porn, looking up useless facts and searching for my mail order bride. After all that's what the internet is for, right? Who knows what would happen if it was used for exchanging ideas, we might even start to think for ourselves, we wouldn't want that would we?

Actually next time I start thinking I might share something I found interesting with everyone Zarth, I'll just save myself and everyone else the time and just ask you to tell everyone what to think about the topic.

We can all stop troubling ourselves with silly questions like where are tax dollars are going and why inflation is so high that millions of Americans will lose their homes this year. We can log into WoW and just accept that the patriot act denies us our basic human rights, allowing the government to arrest us and torture us without ever even laying a charge against us. We can all rest easier because you say so Zarth.... or should I say... George Bush!!! That's right, your secret is out, we all know who you really are!

If you take issue with my perspective, take issue with the perspective, not its implications. You're interpreting - or rather misinterpreting - an analysis as an ad hominem attack.

For the record, when I want to say that I think you're a moron, I'll say that I think you're a moron. I don't mince words.

I have been discussing ideas. Perhaps you didn't read what I wrote. Though it seems increasingly likely you simply failed to comprehend it.

You're the one turning this into something personal.

Your mail-order bride won't likely appreciate sarcastic whining, incidentally, especially when it's done so pathetically. They tend to come froms parts of the world where manhood involves a little more stoicism.

Right. Because I said all that. Go me, single-handedly shutting down the free exchange of ideas, never criticising the PATRIOT ACT, never thinking about the economy, or politics, never paying my membership dues to the ACLU or Amnesty International.

Who knew I was both so powerful yet apathetic? Wow.

Oh, and by the way, I think you're a moron.

I didn't necessarily before. But this was undoubtedly the dumbest post I've read on here in weeks.

I think there's a certain irony involved in someone telling us that we're being brainwashed by certain powers that be, after a 1-hour video transformed him into a conspiracy theorist almost as quickly and magically as the microwave transforms a frozen block of maybe-toxic chemicals into a delicious lasagna dinner.

It's alright; I know I entered this debate on the unpopular side by posting this video. I'm not a conspiracy theorist; I found the video interesting and a little frightening. There is some truth in there and despite all your denials, you know it. That is if you actually take the time to watch the movie before you post your opinions.

Zarth, you know full well what you implied with your "unflattering" appraisal of Conspiracy Theorists or people willing to believe what's in that movie. I don't need to mince words with you or sink to name calling, I don't need to make myself feel big because I'm protected by the anonymity of the internet. I'm sure you have a bright future ahead of you embezzling stocks or putting criminals back on the streets.

I'm done, I started this thread for fun, but I think I've taken enough abuse for one day.

I don't have two hours to watch a strange conspiracy film, so I only watched a random passage... "Sirius [...] which, on december 24th, alligns with the three brightest stars in Orions belt." I showed this to my court astrologer, who laughed out loud. Those four stars are fixed stars which always allign, 24th december or not.

I suppose the rest of the film is similar crap.
