CLINTON: Good evening.

Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

Their purpose is to protect the national interest of the United States, and indeed the interests of people throughout the Middle East and around the world.

Saddam Hussein must not be allowed to threaten his neighbors or the world with nuclear arms, poison gas or biological weapons.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Clinton signed into law HR 4655, the "Iraq Liberation Act
of 1998." In a presidential statement, issued by the White House,
Clinton said, "This Act makes clear that it is the sense of the Congress
that the United States should support those elements of the Iraqi
opposition that advocate a very different future for Iraq than the
bitter reality of internal repression and external aggression that the
current regime in Baghdad now offers. . . . On October 21, 1998, I
signed into law the Omnibus Consolidated and Emergency Supplemental
Appropriations Act, 1999, which made $8 million available for assistance
to the Iraqi democratic opposition. . . My Administration, as required
by that statue, has also begun to implement a program to compile
information regarding allegations of genocide, crimes against humanity,
and war crimes by Iraq's current leaders as a step towards bringing to
justice those directly responsible for such acts

Um? What the fuck does this have to do with the topic.

I feel kind of dirty doing this, but:

It really happened
As did the joint resolution.

However, the attack mentioned was rabidly opposed by the very people now cheerleading for the Chimpster (anybody remember "Wag the Dog?"). And, though alpha22 seems to be implying otherwise, the joint resolution never considered invasion as a viable response. It encouraged support (including militarily) for the Iraqi parties that were working toward democratic regime change.

That is all.

I'm sorry, I missed the part where Clinton established a policy of invading and occupying a sovereign nation, without UN sanction and in opposition to the considered opinions of most of our NATO allies.

I dunno, what's the point of plagiarizing...er...posting something from 38 years ago?

I mean, shit, it's not like things more than a decade old have any impact on current events, right? Every ten years all of humanity around the world essentially "reboots", erasing our entire historical record like a shook-up Etch-A-Sketch.

I mean, unless you're blaming Bill Clinton for...uh...managing to destroy Saddam Hussein's WMD capacity through air strikes rather than rushing us into an incredibly poorly planned invasion and occupation of Iraq? Wow, what a fucktard he was, I guess.

Becuase Operation Desert Fox effectively neutralized Saddam as a threat to US interests and to the Middle East.

In short, the invasion and occupation of Iraq was unnecessary, for any reason whatsoever.

I mean except as a boon to Haliburton.

Well played, Nick.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
But if he's actually asking why it wasn't brought up (presumably in the run-up to war), you haven't actually answered it.

Of course, the truth is that it was brought up. I was saying, to anyone who would listen, exactly the same things Cheney was in this video. Oddly, though, nobody consulted me.

More prominent people opposed the war on similar grounds, of course, and a better question would be why the hell didn't Colinism hear them?
