Anyone living in America the past fifteen years would think Republicans are gay hating bigots who can’t stand big government and love the idea of forcing democracy on other countries. Shockingly, it's not true. According to a new poll by a GOP consultant, many Republicans are actually for universal healthcare and gays in the military.

Fifty-one percent of the GOPers said universal healthcare coverage should be a right of every American, and 49 percent favored allowing gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Your whole fucking world just turned upside down!

The pollster, Tony Fabrizio, conducted a similar poll ten years ago. Republicans who consider themselves conservative have increased by sixteen percent. One in four used to be a Democrat and the party has increased in age. In 1997, 28 percent of Republicans were 55 or older, but the percentage has now increased to 41 percent. Fabrizio broke the Republicans down into seven groups.

    -Bush hawks
    -Moralists
    -Government Knows Best Republicans
    -Dennis Miller Republicans
    -Fortress American Republicans
    -Heartland Republicans
    -Free Market Republicans

Surprisingly, the “Moralists” have not increased dramatically in recent years. Their slice of the party has only increased slightly to just under 25%.

But the amount of “Free-Market” and “Heartland Republicans” has decreased by a large amount. Those two groups made up nearly 50% of all Republicans 10 years ago and now their numbers have dropped to under 20%. Where did they go? Looks like they switched over to the nutjob, immigrant hating and war loving Republicans. The “Bush Hawks” and “Fortress America Republicans” have greatly increased their numbers. Certainly much of that is due to Republican leaders repeatedly trying to install fear in the population by using the war on terror and the immigrant issue.

The most surprising result of the poll by far is how many would support Rudy Giuliani. The “Moralists” were only group who are unsure of the former mayor, but even then the news was not all that bad for him.

Even among “moralists,” 33 percent said they were likely to vote for someone with whom they disagreed on abortion but agreed on many other issues.

McCain is totally fucked. In the center, Republicans prefer Giuliani and on the right they prefer one of several candidates over McCain. Put a fork in John. Seriously, stick a fork in him if you see him.

This doesn’t mean that most Republicans are not still idiots.

Three in four maintain that going to war in Iraq was the right decision.

And that is the reason they will lose any election against a Democratic candidate. (Except Hillary) Republicans will vote for an Iraq war supporter and America is done with it.

Here's a working link to the cited article.

I was really hoping for a definition of a "Dennis Miller Republican".

Dear gods, I certainly hope we are not shackled with President Rudy. I hated him as mayor (though I did admire his ability to stay popular though ensuring everyone hated him equally. It's a NYC thing). whatever

I would also love to know what defines a Dennis Miller Republican.

So they're like Christians, then. By and large, a lovely group of people; but the ones that need to push their way of life on everyone else, whether they want it or not, ruin it for the rest of them.

It would be nice to believe the same could be said about every group of like-minded people on the planet... but then I remember Nazis. Or would they have been a nicer bunch if Hitler didn't get his Jew-hating on?

I'm sure most Nazis were perfectly nice people. The thing is, anyone can commit atrocities under the right combination of circumstances.

Though bigots (of any stripe) do tend to be exceptionally well-suited to it.

God help us if Giuliani becomes president. That guy is an authoritarian statist power-lusting psychopath bent on total autocratic domination. I mean he's almost as bad as Obama and Hillary for christ's sake.

I find it hilarious they're kicking out the only intelligent republican from the debates. Ron Paul is actually honest, and values liberty, and in politics, that's dangerous. He's making the rest of them look foolish, and they hate that. He'd dominate in the presidential race if they made him the candidate... I mean who isn't for dumping the IRS? And he'd actually do it. IMO, anyone not voting for Ron Paul this term is ignorant, mindless, or just plain psychotic- a danger to himself and others.

And no, I'm not a republican, or a democrat. Both parties suck equally.

I don't understand this logic... If more republicans vote, that would mean then would win, wouldn't it? Or if there was a comparable study where it polled those likely to vote, and also polled them if they connect any candidate with the war in Iraq, that would make sense... but that statement alone doesn't show anything. Hell, it could be worrisome considering Democrats seem to always have steam heading into the elections and then the "Heartland" and "Moralists" tend to come out in droves.

Further, some "stupid Americans" might think that the war might have been the right decision morally, considering the human right violations (i.e. those would talk about Darfur in a similar vein, unless some atrocities are better than others?). Others might have believed Saddam was a destabilizing force, as in the Iran-Iraq and Persian Gulf wars. Others might believe it was the right decision based on the facts at the time (otherwise known as "refusal to Monday Morning Quarterback.")

I really don't like either unfounded or bigoted statements, no matter which side of the isle they are. Calling people stupid because they have a different opinion is not conducive to positive exchange, and one reason we're stuck in a stupid deadlock nationally. ISSUES over POSTURING!

(As an aside, this has nothing to do with my views on anything. I think we should invade France and annex Canada, and then bomb Easter Island. I'm crazy like that.)

I can only hope that Ron Paul hires you as his campaign manager now that you've shown your top-notch ability to bring his message across to the teeming masses without seeming insulting or condescending.

All I can say to you guys is the troop surge is working, so we wont be in Iraq for too much longer. I got to say though I would love to have Mcain as president. Ron Paul's chief view on Iraq is it is impossible to win. Obama can't win either, his name sounds way too much like Osama, believe me it will matter and it will be hillarious.

And I suppose there are no pushy liberals (Al Franken)? or environmentalists (Al Gore)? or Homosexuals(Rosie)? or race-baters? (Al Sharpton) Fact is, liberals view conservatives and christians with the same contempt that conservatives view liberalism.

Define "working." Working for the insurgents? For al-Qaeda's terrorist training program? For coffin makers?

Assuming you mean Obama's name and not his voice, I'm guessing by hilarious you mean utterly pathetic.

See, this is the type of statements that are detrimental to our country PROGRESSING. You say he is stupid and brainwashed, yet you spout out partisan statements as "mindwiped" as anyone else. He's serving our country, just as if we were attacked at home, and is owed that much respect, as is any solider. Lord knows you don't seem willing to join the army or navy or whatever.

Did I miss the part where Ron Paul stopped being a huge racist?

Two of my favorite people in the world (ma & pa) are not only Republicans, but Christian Bush-supporters. I'm pretty sure they're Young Earthers, too, but a useful piece of wisdom I picked up along the way is to know what NOT to talk to them about.

Let's also remember that it is possible to be things other than "liberal" and "conservative." Thanks!
