This whole incident is so beyond irrelevant I can't believe it's even in the news. The kid was disruptive at a school-related event and received a mild punishment. Taking that to court was both a joke and a waste of its time.

Given that he was off of school grounds is more the stupid thing. But the stupidest thing is that the Supreme Court even agreed to hear the case in the first place.

OK here is my 2 cents... sure it was off school grounds... so unless it was a school function off school grounds, he shouldn't be suspended... and yes he has the right of free speech... However, if I was that kid's parents I would take him send him out in front of his school with another sign.. stating "I'm an idiot... I wasted lots of taxpayers money just because I could"

The big picture is this, our tax money, and courts time, was wastes on this teenager. Where were the parents in all of this...? Well seeing that this went all the way to the supreme court the parents are sending a message too.. "How dare anyone disipline my child... I don't, so why should anyone else do it?"

Now my parents would have bent me over their knee, a spanked me right in front of the entire school... but we live in times where thats not allowed and that is "mental and physical abuse.".. So how about this parents...

Take away his tv ,cell phone, and his multiple gaming consoles. Make him do weekly drug tests til he turns 18. Because, even if I think pot should be legal for lots of reasons, I would want to make sure my child knew that I didn't condone underage using of any type... Hey, teens have a hard enough time growing up and learning how to interact with the world without drugs clouding up their judgement. Parents need to do their fucking job... Well, at least this one didn't go on a shooting rampage.

Teens have the right to free speech... I'm not disputing that... but come on... He should have known that "Bong hits 4 Jesus" was not appropriate... he was just wanting to show his ass... and we let him continue to bare his ass everytime he went to the courthouse.

They supported him. Because they believed in the reason behind why he did it. Yes, he did it because it was potentially inflammatory. In fact, he did it hoping that someone might get up in arms or at least start a discussion about it. Not about the subject matter, but about the limits of "free" speech. His whole true purpose behind it was to test those limits, to push the boundaries. If his parents didn't support him and his reasoning behind the action, this never would have gotten anywhere past him getting suspended for 10 days!

i am incredibly thrilled that this topic of discussion was brought up. Cases like this need to be brought forward because it further defines our rights as citizens of this country as laid down in the Constitution and has the potential to further protect those rights. I am grateful that my money as a taxpayer were spent on this discussion through every step of the way. What I'm not happy with is the end decision. That's it.

Wow.... sounds to me we have a new jesus christ... honestly Our youth is more intelligent than we were at that age... but damn... lets go ahead an vote the snot nosed kid into the presidency.

I really think people have blown this kid into something he isn't... His lawyers told him what to say to make it look like he was doing it for something more noble than showing his ass... that way the LAWYER gets famous gets money and the kid gets his 15 minutes of fame all in thelie of free speech and maybe along the way kid started to believe the lie... just like alot of people did. When it comes down to it... Kids have the right to free speech... but as parents and ADULTS we should teach our kids when they are wrong. The forum where he pulled off his prank ( and that what it REALLY was) was in a completely inappropriate place. If it was a free speech hw was trying to do in the first place why didn't he just have a sign that stated "Legalize Pot!"? Then I'd back the kid up... but I just don't feel that was the intent.

because it's motherfucking ALASKA where he did it. we spray paint "LEGALIZE IT" and big fuck-off pot leaves on the sides of buildings all over the place and nobody so much as flinches. if his sign said that, it wouldn't be newsworthy because i really don't doubt there were a crapload of those signs sprouting around the Relay route. the message on the banner he made was deliberately chosen to gain attention (which, yes, was part of the reason why he did it, as he is a human being, after all), and his message was not pro-pot deliberately, so he could test his boundaries. nobody expected it to go this far. Especially not him.

to be sure, his lawyer did help him frame his intent in a way to better get it across to the public and in a much flowery way, but he really did want to test the boundaries of his freedom of speech. he's a teenager. teenagers try to push boundaries. it's what they do. he just did it in a much more spectacular manner and in a much more intelligent way (not surprising as i believe he was an excellent student, though it has been a while since i've read about more than just court procedings in this matter).

I remember, in my teens, being approached by Christian Fundamentalists who tried to persuade me that playing role-playing games would get me into the Occult and lead me down the sad and slippery path to Hell!!! eeek However, I was already into the Occult, having begun to take an interest in it before I started playing role-playing games so their warning came too late. Muah ha ha!!

Well with all of this colorful banter or cursing I guess the best way this to say at this point would be He tested his boundaries and the ADULTS finally put the kid in his place. Something that I guess should have been done by his parents.

If this was really a freedom of speech issue.. howcome the ACLU didn't get involved? Normally they get involved with every REAL civil liberty case there is... and yes my wife is a member and she never heard a word about it...

This was a kid that had a prank that suspended him from school for 10 freaking days... Poor kid... maybe he was actually trying to get his hispanic buddy Jesus (hey zeus)some free bud... nothing more charitable than getting your buddy high.

The reason I joke is the fact you and everyone else screaming free speech is really taking this to heart when it was a KID as in under the age of 18. As a KID he was treated like one... When he becomes an adult, then maybe he will be taken more seriously...

Oh one other thing... it's ok to agree to disagree... you have your viewpoint Sylis... and I have mine. I'm not saying your wrong for feeling the way you feel... I'm just saying that I disagree...

How about this... lets get everyone that believes that pot should be legal, including myself, and march up to the Mall in D.C. and protest... Have pot signs as far as the eye can see... Get some sponsers like Hostess and Frito Lay, and have the million bud march. Bring the heavy hitters like Tommy Chong, Woody from Cheers, and that guy from fast times at ridgemont high.

Pot should honestly be legal though, but only to persons at the age of 21 when they can make ADULT decisions about what they want to put into thier bodies. But some brat like that kid puts the REAL people trying to make it legal look like fools, and makes it harder to get the real point across.

That's enough from me in this forum, I'll let you come back with more cursing to get your point across... but I'm done stating my beliefs on this trite matter.
