I thought this article was going to be about The National Association of Broadcasters. You know, the FCC's true masters.

I hate the Parents Television Council. But you know what I like to do? Use their website to counteract their work. Kind of like how they flood the FCC with complaints. Simply click on the link to who ever they wish you to contact. There you will be presented with a form email which you can edit. I simply delete the form letter and write what ever I want. Usually it is either supporting a sponsor or telling a representative not to bow to a certain special interest group.

well you do realize FTR it's the idiotic voters in the US that make this all possible don't you

How is this the voters? it's one group of people who are very vocal about something they believe in. If anything it's the rest of us NOT speaking out and saying we approve of what we are seeing that are the problem. smile

"And these fuckers have gotten their way with our idiotic Congress. Last week Congress gave final approval to raise indecency fines from the current $32,500 to $325,000 for each infraction. The fines apply to each individual network station, not the network as a whole. One fine could seriously harm a network. Oh, and the PTC is lobbying for the same fines to be applied to Cable. If the Christians don't think they are going to get the shit kicked out of them by corporate lawyers, then they are in for a big surprise."

The voters elect the Congress that enables the FCC to do these things.
Just as the voters elected? Bush and Co. enabling them to do as they please.

Voters do elect the Congress, but that doesn't mean that the person in office stands for the exact values of his/her constituents. They have the ability to vote any way they want.

Also, Congress does not oversee the FCC. The 5 commissioners of the FCC are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Congress may have increased the fine, but that doesn't mean anything is going to become more censored. As long as they stick to the FCC's rules they won't be fined.

it all reminds me in a roundabout way of that line from "Apocalypse Now":

"We train young men to drop fire on people. But their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!"

^ You need to worry more about media consolidation than this silly "decency" issue.

And then there's this, which I don't fully understand, but I know it's bad. Bad!

So what is really curious is these people get thier panties all ina bunch over a tittie and some "obscene" language, but they have no problem with all the violence and murders that occurs on the T.V. on a minute by minute basis. Sounds like thier priorities are fucked up to me.

FCC 101

Many many decades ago, it was decided that broadcast spectrum is a finite resource, and must be regulated to prevent it from becoming useless due to interference.
(If two TV channels both broad casted on channel 11, than nobody with a TV would be able to receive a clear channel 11 signal)
It was also decided that the American people owned the broadcast spectrum, and the government could license spectrum to corporations with the promise that they would broadcast media in the interest of "the public good".

This means that you, I and everyone who are supposed to control the government, own the spectrum, and they regulate it for us. The government created the FCC, who is empowered to fine or revoke the licenses of the companies they are issued to, if they do not broadcast in the interest of the people.
Thus, the reason why "public indecency" is not allowed on public airwaves.

Cable is completely different, and the government has no ability to regulate it, no matter what they think they can do. Cable is a medium owned wholly by corporations, and attempting to regulate its programming is a 100% free speech issue.
