Did it really take you four days to think up that retort?

Four, agonizing, cold sweating days. But I got there.

How are Logic and Science " Systems of Faith" ?

I already told you. You just didn't like the answer.

You decided that a whole group of people can be considered arrogant, smug hypocrites for their beliefs because you could redefine and generalize their beliefs into something you feel is the same as any other " system of Faith".
Then you've continued to be a smug, arrogant hypocrite for , oh , what is it 5 pages now ?

You have so far failed to even DEFINE the most basic words in your concept, a concept that has been utterly rejected by everyone except you.

Congratulations, you've convinced yourself that Science is a Faith. surreal

A simple apology would do if you don't want to continue to embarrass yourself. Or you can just let the thread fade into oblivion. I don't care. I have a sports car.

Yeah, but I actually didn't insult Athiests. At times I guess I consider myself one.

I don't know what your obsession with dictionary definitions of words is, maybe it's the way they taught at school when I was a baby.
I've already talked about the justifications behind that comment. Arguing over the semantics of how I worded it initially may seem like fun to you, but I'm not into it. If the basic ideas behind the passing comment I made aren't good enough for you, if you want to twist what I said beyond all recognition to give yourself an excuse to get all worked up, if you just want an ego boost and for someone to say 'You're right' over something that really is a discussion of opinion... well good luck to you, matey boy. x

Edit: Ha, I just noticed your edit. I have a push-bike. You fucking win.

^ A very good point.

(Hoooly shit. A huge thunderstorm just started. The thunder and hail is setting off car-alarms. Fucking hell.)

Zarth is right. It's not interesting. It's not even advanced thinking I'm proposing here. Anybody that's read a bit of Nietzche (out of context) or any post-modern theorist will be familiar ideas like these. You don't have to agree with them at all.

Can you go back in time and make me Emperor? Cause that'd be a lot more useful to me.

You could just go back and buy shares in Tesco. Same thing. If you want to be emperor of the UK that is, which admittedly not a lot of people do.

I'm not willing to accept Tesco as my emperor and overlord yet, I'm sticking with Waitrose. Fight teh power.

Hey ... you live in Seattle where there is nothing to do but drink coffee and watch re-runs of Frasier. This thread should be the most interesting part of your day.

If you were really keen, you could group all human thought under 'faith' if you wanted to turn it into a rather distorted umbrella term.

But, when you get down to the practical level of it, the distinction between science and faith is that science explains the universe in a way that is clearly observable and produces results. Faith just messes around with a host of rather spurious and unlikely characters and fables that reflect the moral biases of the societies that created and propogated them.

There is nothing more sterile than an argument about religion. At least until knives, torches, and carbombs start popping out.

Then I'll concede it gets interesting. But only for the Schadenfreude. It's not like anybody ever resolves anything.

Funny enough!

Against my better judgment, back on topic: I actually quite like Salman Rushdie. Has anyone read Imaginary Homelands?

Sometimes the aim is not to resolve anything though, as much as offer an alternative perspective. I can't speak for any of you, but I find it interesting to see how other people think and how their ideas are formed, even if I don't adopt their perspective as my own.

Well, that's certainly laudable, but such discussions aren't quite the same thing as debates where both sides adopt incompatible, exclusionary claims to truth. It doesn't really matter at that point how those claims are derived, because an exclusionary truth claim is generally effectively equivalent to an arbitrary one, at least from the perspective of an outside observer not holding to it.

I would stab this thread in a second.
Carbomb it, then light whatever was left on fire.

For fun.
