I've read everything in this post. I was posting at the same time you were.

You still didn't answer the question, you just said what you think wouldn't work. What do you think would work? What would you do?

I doubt anything would work. But I'd try talking to him. Probably about children and about God. I'd suspect that that might have the best chance of changing his mind and convincing him to assist me as anything - because that's the real goal, isn't it? To obtain cooperation.

Without that, the bomb goes off.

Since we are talking about a television reality merging with ours.

We could hope that the terrorist is part of the 10% of the population susceptible to hypnotism.

Or alternately, we could try out some Truth Serum.

I mean, errr get em drunk and do what Zarth said.

Torture would more than likely be useless, but don't take my word for it, read the words of the people below instead.

Scalia really needs an education on the finer points television. Maybe then he'd realise that Jack Bauer has fecking nothing on Hawkeye Pierce.

You're pretending that there's something high-minded and protective about your desire to inflict suffering on our enemies. There isn't. It's useless, and it soils our hands. And it justifies their hatred - as if they needed justification.

And it gives dangerous forrn liberals like me ammunition. mgcchkn wouldn't want that, would he?

And it justifies their hatred - as if they needed justification. And your course of action would intensify his resistance at the worst possible time. Punishment is pretty unreliable at encouraging compliance, especially in the short term.

No, the reason you'd like to inflict suffering on these people is just to make yourself feel better. Because you believe they deserve it.

And they* do. That's not the issue. The issue is whether we allow ourselves to become our enemies.

* That is, the actual terrorists, not the Abduls and Yusufs picked up in random sweeps, or denounced to the Coalition by informers to whom they owe money, or whatever

I'd just bore the bastards into giving up the bomb location. That could be called torture, I guess...If you can call a 10 hour lecture on copyright law torture.

How come this is the only scenario the pro-tortue types can come up with? Ever heard this one before?

"You know, what if you had a kill one little girl to save a million lives? Would you do it man?"

What if Jesus opened a inter-demensional portal in my wall and invited me out for some beer but on the way to the bar, we get jumped by a couple of lizard ninjas?

See, now that's a good question.

I might have to say no. But I think a lot would depend on the specifics of the scenario.

This is a better question.

Nice that you had to throw a personal attack in there. smile

I'm not throwing away "our self-protected liberties and morals/ethics." I'm not allowing them to apply to terrorists, but if you're in the business of defending terrorists that want to kill you, be my guest. Let me know how that turns out for you if the "war" ever gets onto our shores.

Wow. You should read books and stuff. There's a bunch of themi this place called "Germany" in the1930's. They were pretty much all saying the same thing you do here. Yay! You have friends!

Ouch. Godwin.

Know who liked to compare people to Nazis?

Obviously that's when you break out the Coca-Cola polar bear and start square-dancing.
