We had two senior pranks go wrong. When I was a freshmen, the seniors decided it would be a good idea to put liquid steel into the keyholes of all the classrooms. 8 or 12 of them were suspended and coulnd't walk in graduation.

When I was a senior, everyone broke into the school the night on one of the nights during the last school week. Brought sleeping bags and planned to spend the night. And...went to the local driving range and took hundreds of golf balls, then released them into the classrooms. Who knew golf balls could break windows? I don't remember what the punishment was but the school understood we didn't mean to do any damage. I think we just paid for the windows and probably did some kind of detention.

Drunk drivers everywhere would be getting away with murder if we followed your laws.

There is a vast difference between accidentally running into someone with your car (thus killing or severely injuring them), and doing something factually innocuous that other people wind up interpreting as a bomb.

I'm all for prosecuting people who deliberately employ fake bombs or other faked weapons in order to scare people or commit some other more dangerous crime. But inadvertently triggering someone's paranoia is a whole different story. And one of those cases where intent should make all the difference.

What you are all forgetting is that we are living in a post 9/11 world. What that means is that now anytime law enforcement, city and state officials, and/or the public wildly overreact and excercise a complete lack of rational judgement by treating an incident with the most spurious and fanciful resemblance to 'explosives' as the undoubted hand of Osama coming down upon us, we must applaud them for their sterling response to a potential threat* and accept the inevitable circle jerk of self-congratulations.

*"potential threat" being government speak for "something that was not in any conceivable way a threat."

I didn't forget that at all. I'm saying it's sad we've put ourselves into this situation. Yeah, everything you said is true, but do we really ask ourselves, "how the fuck did we end up in this situation?"

I get the feeling that in ten years or so, we could be attacked again and everybody will be wondering why? (Maybe a over-reaching foreign policy in the middle east and a little country with a name that starts with an "I"?) I'm not justifying violence or terrorism but why the hell do we keep giving them reasons to attack us?

I don't think their sentencing will be that harsh, and if it is, that's a little ridiculous.

But for 19 kids to break into a school and place objects wrapped in duct tape all over the place and not even *think,* during the current climate of our country, that they could be misconstrued as bombs... well.. those kids are just dumb.

Except that pulling a false fire alarm is a felony in a lot of (most? all?) places.

Technically, they should be punished for breaking and entering the school, but not for the clocks.

Hopefully sentencing will be lenient. It was stupid to break into the school, but it's also kind of alarming that the school didn't think to do anything about a key that had been missing for a year...

They should have just brought the clocks in with them. Probably would have had the same outcome, though.

My high school doesn't even realize that a teacher that quit still has keys to the school, and it's been this way for four years. Don't tell anyone. Oh wait. Oops.
