Poland targets 'gay' Teletubbies
By Adam Easton
BBC News, Warsaw

A senior Polish official has ordered psychologists to investigate whether the popular BBC TV show Teletubbies promotes a homosexual lifestyle.

The spokesperson for children's rights in Poland, Ewa Sowinska, singled out Tinky Winky, the purple character with a triangular aerial on his head.

"I noticed he was carrying a woman's handbag," she told a magazine. "At first, I didn't realise he was a boy."

EU officials have criticised Polish government policy towards homosexuals.

Ms Sowinska wants the psychologists to make a recommendation about whether the children's show should be broadcast on public television.

Poland's authorities have recently initiated a series of moves to outlaw the promotion of homosexuality among the nation's children.

Tinky Winky's psychological evaluation is being treated fairly light-heartedly by many people here.

One radio station asked its listeners to vote for the most suspicious children's show. Some e-mailed in to point out that Winnie the Pooh had only male friends.

Even Ms Sowinska has backtracked a little, insisting that she does not believe the Teletubbies is a threat to the nation's children. But the evaluation is still going ahead and her office can recommend that the show should be taken off the air.

Poland was criticised recently after its education ministry announced plans to sack teachers who promote homosexuality.

Last month the European Union singled out Poland for criticism in its resolution condemning homophobia in the 27-member bloc.

Isn't this Tinky Winky thing old news by now? I wonder what the verdict is there on Bert and Ernie.

And Winnie the Pooh does NOT only have male friends, Kanga is female.

She's a single mom, too, is she not? I don't remember any Mr. Kanga.

Of course, Pooh and those folks really only wanted to hang out with Roo, anyway.

"Promote homosexuality"?

I just don't understand this. Do people really believe that otherwise straight people will magically turn gay if they are exposed to gay people or gay lifestyles/culture?

By that logic there should be no gay people at all. Because obviously the gay people would all turn straight after being completely bombarded with "straight" lifestyle and culture being thrust down their throats through religion, family, friends, music, literature, television, books, advertising etc. all day, every fucking day from the second they are born!

Fuck, some people have too much stupid.

You're just saying this as an excuse for not meeting your annual recruitment goals, aren't you?

And, in all seriousness, I've always wondered why so few people see the glaring fallacy there, too. But then again, their belief-systems tend to be full of glaring fallacies already, and one more doesn't seem to matter much past a certain point.

Oh well.

I remember watching the Teletubbies once. At one point Tinky-Winky was attacked by a vacumm cleaner which attacked itself to his butt with the suction force. Tinky Winky responded by gigglingly madly.

So yah; he is SOOOOOOO gay biggrin

I can see where they're coming from. I mean I still remember sitting down when I was 10 or 11, drawing a big line down the middle, labeling one side gay and the other side straight, and fillig each side with pros and cons. I balanced it out and choose for myself as it should be, but think of the children. If you show them a genderless imaginary creaturing behaving in a certain way when they're that young it will totally skew their decision later in life when they have to choose for themselves what gender they find sexually attractive.

It's the aerial on Tinky Winky's head, broadcasting all those gay signals. That's what's going to get people. If they're worried about the kids watching, just issue them with tin foil hats.

No, when I say old I mean almost a decade old. Is the show new in Poland? My ten year old was watching it here as a toddler, and it was around in the UK before that.

And for the last time, Pooh isn't gay. He has psychological issues.
