I just kinda want to get a feel for the overall political percentages on SG here. I myself am wholeheartedly for the Libertarian party, but i tend to lean Republican between the two big guys. So whats it like here? 80% Liberal and 20% Conservative??? More Moderates than anything else? Hmm?

Edited because of overwhelming sarcasm and cynicism which would have been unfair to post in this thread...

...nor am I American, so I don't get to vote...

In the last Swedish election I voted for the Left Party, but realised I should have gone for the Greens. If anybody cares...

Well, since the Republicans hate the site because it's immoral, and the Democrats hate the site because it's degrading, I say we all vote Libertarian.

I am libertarian with a lower case l. In other words I am not a fan of the Libertairian party. I agree with them on nearly every issue, however there are Libertarians who are extremely anti-abortion. in fact most Libertarians who make it to office get there by working the prolife people.

also there are other little things that irritate me about the party.

I'm Canadian (from Ontario). I've voted for the socialist NDP party in past elections, but I've also voted Liberal (which is a centre-left party). I'll probably keep voting Liberal, not because I think they're tops, but because the idea of the right-wing pseudo-blue collar Alliance party taking office frightens me, and voting Liberal is the best way to ensure that Alliance remains a regional party.

In my dream world we'd go to a proportional representation system like the one Germany uses, in which you vote twice: once for your party of preference, and once for your local representative of preference. I won't get into all of the details, but a system like that would let the Greens finally take a few seats, and allow people to vote for their party of preference, instead of casting votes just to keep an unappealing party out of office. It would also remind the Liberals that they don't own parliament. What can I say?--I'm a dreamer...

Maybe this might make the discussion more interesting.

Do the quesionnaire and share your rating. I'm dead centre in the left/libertarian quadrant.

(edited to answer Olivia: I don't know what MMP is--or if I once did, I've forgotten. I just recall what I learned in a poli sci course long ago. Germany's bundesrat (parliament) is split, like the ballot, into two halves: one half of the seats are for local representatives, and the other are "adjustment seats", which are alloted in accordance with relative party support. So the allotment of seats goes like this: whichever local representative garners the most votes wins his/her riding and takes a seat in the first group, while the "adjustment" seats are filled in accordance with the total support a party received at the ballot box. The current Canadian system goes like this: if your party's local representatives win, say, 30% of the votes in every single riding while the other parties get less than 30% each, your party wins 100% of the seats. If your party's local representatives each receive, say, 10% of the vote in every single riding, your party doesn't have a hope in hell of getting a single seat. It's a shitty deal that encourages strategic voting. I'd like to see it improved upon so that Canada too can have a pot-smoking Rastafarian in parliament.)

yead dave. I love the libertarian views cuz its as close to total freedom as gov't can come, but realistically they can't stick to them totally and expect to be elected. seriously, look at northern michigan. Our rep is a democrat, but he is in favor of guns, i guess ya just can't win 'em all . . . However, we can kill 'em all, maybe the nazi's weren't so far off eh? Don't mind me tho, i'm a black-hearted bastard who wouldn't mind if 99% of the planets population died tomorrow.

edited to say i'm damn near dead center on that compass, just a bit up and right . . .

Here is where I out myself. I am a registered Democrat and take great pride in the fact that I have never voted for a single Republican candidate for any office. I may not always agree with the Dems platform, but their big issues speak to me more than the Republicans' do. Also, I would never waste my vote by giving it to some crackpot third party that has no chance of winning an election. I'm all about winning and losing. Making a "statement" doesn't count for shit in politics.

Same here- not really surprising. I tend to stay out of politics, though- it's a dirty fuckin' business. I do like the fact that I share similar political views with Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama, though. Makes me feel a bit better about myself.

My biggest problem with The Libertarian Party is their lack of public support for the arts & other social obligations. There was a local election to retro-fit LA county museums for earthquakes, and all the libertarians completely opposed it. It seems like selfish social isolation to me. I'm happy when my tax dollars go towards something our community can be proud of.

it seems selfish to me to force people to pay for non-essential stuff they don't want to pay for. If you want to retrofit museums people should get together privately to take care of it. (and no, I don't believe the government should even own museums in the first place).
