yeah, but WHO are they polling? 48% of adults maybe in a rural, conservative area, but not, say, 48% of people in portland!
I hate to break this to you, but Portland isn't exactly NYC or LA.
Didn't you already receive a verbal beatdown for misrepresenting Portland? Do you have something against the city?
Portland is easily one of the most liberal cities in the country, it's up there with San Francisco, and in fact many San Franciscans are moving up here for the similar lifestyle yet much cheaper cost of living.
Fuck Portland; there, you're still under the whip of Lord Bush and his gang of ignorant warmongers. Come to Canada, where religion is half as important as it is in the US! Source
Religion is much more important to Americans
than to people living in other wealthy nations. Six-inten
(59%) people in the U.S. say religion plays a very
important role in their lives. This is roughly twice the
percentage of self-avowed religious people in Canada
(30%), and an even higher proportion when compared
with Japan and Western Europe.
Just stay the fuck out of Alberta unless you want to rape the earth with fellow Texans.

I also find it hard to believe that only 49% of people personally know an atheist. I can't swing a bible without hitting one.
I find that people are wont to assume X unless proven otherwise. I usually assume fellow students are atheist, but I am often very surprised. (it might astonish you to pose this sort of question to some of your colleagues) On the other hand, I had a Muslim friend who was shocked to discover my non-affiliation in any religion. He had simply assumed I was Christian like all the rest. And so began his attempts to convert me which continue to this day...

Or did you completely miss the point as usual?
Oregon = Boondocks. Deal with it, Gomer.
Uh, that's not even the point. She meant that there are rural conservative areas, and there are urban liberal areas, like Portland.
And apparently every city to you that's not NY or LA is the "Boondocks" so I won't even bother with whatever your point actually was.
More on topic: I would be interested in seeing what the survey looked like. I mean, was the question as straightforward as: "Do you think evolution is a big old crock?" It just seems like this is the kind of thing that is ripe for follow up questions. Maybe folks believe in more of a deist approach, or maybe the questions framed the issue ... 'cause those numbers sound *crazy* high, just at a first blush (note: not impossibly high, just really really high).
