All the more reason to "update." I'm sure that term made sense back during those expansion periods when we had little information on how large this continent truly was.

But then again, we still call aluminum foil "tin foil."

Viva la progress.

Oh, we had information on how large it was. It all just happened to belong to other people prior to a couple of wars and a subsequent decades-long campaign of ethnic cleansing.

What are they teaching kids in school, these days?

I wonder whether people just don't know where any of the states in the Midwest actually are. Or that there are actually states here.

(Actually, though, you're probably right about the NC assumption.)

I dated this girl from Michigan who considered MI and IL to be part of the midwest. She then claimed that "everyone" from her state considered Michigan to be part of the midwest. This totally baffled me.

I pulled up a map and showed her it's nowhere near any "mid" or "west" at all. If anything, Michigan would be the "mideast".

Technically, it seems like states such Colorado and Utah would be the midwest.

We're not exactly a smart population.

I think this

is what makes up the Midwest.

That's how I've always thought of it. I think Michigan counts as the Midwest. Even though it's weird and its residents talk at LEAST as funny as Minnesotans if not more so and it has somehow wormed its way into the Eastern timezone, which makes no sense. tongue

I'm coming into this discussion late, but...

What the fuck is wrong with the South? Seriously?

You do realize that North Dakota is not by any stretch of the imagination a southern state, right? surreal

I saw this when he posted it but I didn't have the energy to mount yet another discussion about prejudice directed at the South based on my assumption that he read the headline quickly and just assumed that it was talking about North Carolina.

But maybe he was juts another kind of stupid.

You mean there isn't a state called Midwest? Huh.

My state's kinda scraggly. Minnesota's just got a square lower-left corner.

And Wisconsin would be scragglier if Michigan hadn't oddly claimed the UP. That also makes no sense about Michigan.

Other than that, though, you're pretty much right.

I'll start with saying that I don't at all agree with the ruling. I understand it completely, but I think that people should be free to do what they want with their property (and body) when they want without asking mommy and daddy for permission.

BUT. I think the writer of this article is turning it into a gender war that it is not meant to be.

Could it be any clearer that children--especially girl children--are essentially chattel in the eyes of these people? In ND, kids over 14 can get confidential treatment for addiction or STDs (as they should). But pregnancy, which specifically affects only girls? Nope.

There is a big difference between a check for an STD and care for someone who has another living thing inside their womb that will affect the rest of their life (Mind you an STD like herpes or HIV will affect the rest of your life, but it's not something that your going to have to throw money at for the next 18 years). Also if guys could get pregnant then I'm pretty sure they would be required by that law to get permission for prenatal care as well.

I think they should be more concerned about why so many girls that young are getting pregnant in the first place.

That's just my 0.02

Not only that, SineFato - but it sucks that kids can't be completely open and honest with their parents in the first place.

But then again, part of being totally honest requires the ability of the persons (or parents) hearing that honestly to be able to handle it.

It's a shame that parents can't just allow their kids to be completely honest about what they are exploring without turning into some kind of warden.

So, I have a very real question, and it's something I've wondered about for a bit:

Just how does parental notification generally work for medical treatment? I remember, vaguely, as a teen my parents having to sign for me to be treated - b/c as a minor I have restricted rights (this is, I believe, why things like drug testing, locker searches, and restricted speech are all possible on high school campuses, right?). I mean, am I remembering this wrong - is this a weird Illinois law, or were my parents actually signing an insurance form? (But really - I could have *sworn* it was a "Freedom to Treat" clause or some such thing).

Really - I'm asking and not making any point: Just what is the current relationship, in general, between parents and their consent in their children's medical treatment? 'Cause that would seem to matter here.

As I said here, this is all I know:
"Here (in Florida), when I was in family practice, we couldn't treat children at all without their patents or guardian; not for routine stuff like school physicals, colds, fractues or anything. I'm not sure about now, as I'm no longer in family practice and I have no dialysis patients that are minors, nor am I sure about pregnancies or abortions, as across the board we needed the "responsible" adult(s) present (in certain cases we accepted written permission following a phone call from a parent we recognized), but no one wanted to risk a law suit or license loss or whatever."

Gracias - and sorry I missed this the first time. Anyway, *I* don't want to make the point about what this means for parental approval for teens receiving family planning of any kind - but it seems to matter in some fashion. Or, at least, there's a *broader* argument about children's rights that needs to go on.

It makes me really sad that my home state can't learn to be more progressive. frown
