1985 - The Syrian Socialist National Party (SSNP), a secular, pro-Syrian, Lebanese organization, sent the first female bomber, a 17-year-old Lebanese girl named Sana'a Mehaydali, to blow herself up near an Israeli convoy in Lebanon in 1985. Out of 12 suicide attacks conducted by the SSNP, women took part in five of them.

1991 - Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a female suicide bomber. She killed a total of 18 people that day, including herself.

2002: Aayat al-Akhras, an 18-year-old high school student from the Dehaishe refugee camp killed two Israeli civilians and wounded 22 others at a supermarket in Jerusalem. Ghazi Algosaibi, noted Saudi poet and ambassador to the UK, dedicated his poem, Martyrs to her.

"Tell Aayat, the bride of loftiness … She embraced death with a smile while the leaders are running away from death. Doors of heaven are opened for her."

2002: Andalib Suleiman al-Taqatiqah, detonated herself outside a market in Jerusalem. She killed six civilians and wounded over 60 other people.

2002: Dareen Abu Aisheh, carried out a bombing 20 kilometers from Jerusalem, she wounded two Israeli policemen.

2002: Suicide bomber Wafa' Idris, a resident of Ramallah, killed one Israeli civilian in her attack and wounded over 90 others.

2003 - Twenty-one Israeli citizens were killed and 48 wounded when Hanadi Jaradat, a female suicide bomber, detonated herself at a restaurant in Haifa.

2003 - Hiba Azem Daraghmeh, killed 3 Israeli civilians and wounded 50 others in her attack carried out in a shopping mall in Afula.

2004 - Reem Saleh al-Riyashi, a female Hamas suicide bomber, detonated herself in the industrial zone in the vicinity of Erez crossing in the Gaza Strip. The attack left 3 soldiers and one civilian dead and 10 more wounded.

December 2006 - Three suicide bombers in Somalia, including one woman, killed eight people when they detonated their explosives.

After Lebanon in the 1980s, female suicide bombers appeared in other troubled regions, including Sri Lanka, Turkey, Chechnya, and Israel. Some estimate that across the globe; approximately 17 groups have started using the tactical innovation of suicide bombing, with women operatives accounting for 15 percent of those attacks.

Since the second Chechen War in 1999, women have participated in more than 18 major attacks since the outbreak of the second Chechen War in 1999 and these women have been a serious threat since 2000. Targets are no longer military; they now aim to kill civilians. One Russian woman was quoted as saying, "Oh, yes, I want to kill them. Kill Russians, kill their children. I want them to know what it is like"
