Also, that might have allowed him to tell people stuff. Now, he's conveniently dead.

Which is why I struggle so much with our presence there. We can't even fix our own country yet we're going to shift our energy and efforts outside our borders? Doesn't make much sense to me.

The two are not mutually exclusive, actually, although it's pretty obvious that this particular case has fuck all to do with fixing Iraq and is actively fucking the US because of the hundreds of billions of dollars flowing to it instead of productive things.

I don't imagine there's much for his execution to change. Violence has gone on before and will continue to go on, business as usual.

Hearing Bush talk about justice being served kind of got me thinking about how politics has become sort of an unstoppable machine for destroying people. I got to feeling its momentum.

Saddam workd real hard on that machine and did plenty to earn his hanging, but I kind of dislike how pleased Bush sounded at how well the people destroying machine of politics worked in this instance.

I don't see how he could have been not hanged, but these matters are distasteful and discussion of them should reflect that.

I agree he's a douche bag but it would have been better to say, "look, we want to set an example for the country by NOT killing saddam, by ending the cycle of violence. now the rest of the country please follow this example"

When the goal is destablizing a country to steal its resources you dont use such moral methods.

it sure does look that way!

This whole thing was handled too fast in order to throw some kind of "look what progress we've made" spin on things. I think it would have worked out better if the judgement, or at least some of the appeals were carried out after the U.S. had pulled back a bit and weren't so hands on with everything. It would gve the whole rotten business a bit more credibility in the eyes of many nations.

Pitching a grenade into the hole they found him in would have been much faster and simpler. He was armed - why risk somebody going in to pull him out?

Um, well, hardly. I mean, it's pretty unstable now. How's that working ot for anyone. Lack of stability in situations like this just increases the number of people within the country fighting over stewardship of those resources. If we were only after oil, as has been said and parroted far too often, we probably would have either bought Saddam or replaced him with a new friendly dictator. A stable country with a powerful, friendly, and corrupt despot would have gotten us more oil than the crap we're seeing now.

It's a shame to oversimplify this war. "No Blood for Oil" sounds neat and makes a good chant, but it just isn't so.

It would have made him a martyr, the "defiant president going out in a blaze of glory against the american invaders". A lot of people would never believe it was him killed. He needed to be an example of justice being served...but not frontier justice.

Can't we all just be happy that one major asshole is dead? Drink a fucking holiday toast to the end of the guy responsible for the deaths of millions of Iraqis and Iranians and the invasion of Kuwait.

The Romanian version worked out the same, but more quickly:

In late December 1989, with the "revolution" spinning rapidly out of control, Nicolae and Elena Ceauescu fled Bucharest by helicopter, were soon captured, then held at a military base in northern Romania. Here a makeshift courtroom has been arranged for their speedy "trial". Charges against the Ceausescus are formally read by the military tribunal, condemning them to death. Nicolae blusters "I do not recognize this." Bangs fist. "How can you condemn me?" Ordered to stand up Elena shouts "We are people. You can't treat us this way." The spokesman for the tribunal continues "In the name of the law of the people we are declaring you are condemned to death. All your possessions will be collected and transmitted to the people according to the penal code. We are pronouncing this public sentence today Dec. 25, 1989."

Soldiers with guns surround Nicolae and Elena and begin to tie their hands behind their backs to lead them outside to be executed; they protest loudly and struggle. Elena screams "Do not tie me up! What are you doing here? You don't have the right to tie me up. Child do not do this to me! Don't you listen? Stop touching me. Haven't you heard? What are you doing?" Nicolae tells Elena "Relax. Leave it be." "Let me go!" screams Elena. Let my hands go!" Nicolae shouts "How do you have the right to do this?"

Note the similar holiday timing.

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. - Matthew 26:52

He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. - Revelations 13:10

This is why it's been at least a year since I read or posted to the boards. Oh well.

You've taken that quote out of context. It is not a threat or a promise or a justification for violence; it's a warning along the lines of "lie down with dogs, get up with fleas".

Jesus has just been singled out by Judas and the soldiers were about to arrest him when one of the disciples lashed out and cut off the ear of a soldier. Jesus tells the disciple to put up his sword and restores the soldier's ear. Jesus is telling his disciple that violence is acceptable, even when one is being persecuted. I think he'd agree with Shakespeare that "the quality of mercy is not strained... It is twice blest:/It blesseth him that gives and him that takes."

Why do people keep making the mistake that "it's about oil" means "it's gonna provide cheap oil for everybody?" It doesn't mean that, and it never did.

"It's about oil" means "it's gonna provide huge profits for the oil companies." And it has done that in spades. Mission Accomplished!!

Thank you. I think as I revised it, it was supposed to go from "not acceptable" to "unacceptable" or vice versa. And wound up being neither.
