I expect that this problem will fix itself over time, as people move away from older ways, including more women moving away from homemaking as their career.

I kind of remember thinking exactly this about 25 years ago.

amen. you have to work for change, power is never given willingly to the oppressed. the oppressed have to demand it.

But the problem is that when I go around and speak on campuses, I still don't get young men standing up and saying, 'How can I combine career and family?'
-gloria steinem

there are very few jobs that actually require a penis or vagina. All other jobs should be open to everybody. ~Florynce Kennedy

Erma Bombeck:
We've got a generation now who were born with semiequality. They don't know how it was before, so they think, this isn't too bad. We're working. We have our attache' cases and our three piece suits. I get very disgusted with the younger generation of women. We had a torch to pass, and they are just sitting there. They don't realize it can be taken away. Things are going to have to get worse before they join in fighting the battle.

Lya Sorano:
When we talk about equal pay for equal work, women in the workplace are beginning to catch up. If we keep going at this current rate, we will achieve full equality in about 475 years. I don't know about you, but I can't wait that long.

i wrote my law journal note concerning this topic, specifically with regard to what some other countries are doing to fix workplace gender probelms and let's just say that while no country has found the perfect solution, many are light years ahead of the US. surprise, suprrise.

maureen dowd has a wonderful article about college-aged women today and the dsiproportionate amount of whom are actually seeking to be stay-at-home moms and such. i can't remember what it's called and i don't have access to my hard copy, but it's worth reading.

I work as a teacher and this profession is a female dominated one. We are payed rather poorly compared to other occupations with similar qualifications (all teachers in Australia must have a mininum of 4 yrs of university)
One of my older colleagues (he's been teaching for as long as I've been breathing) continually tries to convince the young males on staff (all three of us) to change professions due to the low opportunities for advancement. He has a theory that Teaching is a custom made womens job, in that the hours are school based, the holidays are the same as the kids, and it is a role of nurturing. He argues that one of the reasons the rate of pay is lower than other occupations is because that women are willing to take the lower pay if it means that they have the flexibility to care for their own children. I don't completely agree with all he has to say and find it offensive that he only endeavours to convince the males to cheese it(students need male teachers in schools) but he does have a point.
Traditionally women were all about family and men about providing for said family - these are not easy roles to break. Males tend to go after the dollar where as Females' priorities are not always so focussed on green.
At times I feel as if I should have chosen another career but then I enjoy educating - even if I am a tres ordinary teacher.
I have a habit of straying off the point in these post thingys so worry not on my ramble.

Not to be flip, but a fuck of a lot has changed with respect to gender inequity in the workplace in the last 25 years. It has been changing, but it has not been because of spontaneous "moving away from thinking" as that fellow suggested. It has been because there have been women working hard to change things, as there still are today contrary to the beliefs of more than a few people in this thread. People seem to think that human's ideas evolve and improve over time all on their own, it's incredibly obtuse.
