Don't forget about all the oil rigs, refineries, major interstate pipelines and petroleum terminals in the area. A large percentage of America's oil comes through the immediate area, which is critical for maintaining supply through at least a dozen states.

We, as humans, cannot build levees to withstand a Cat 5. Katrina doubled in size and reached Cat 5 levels in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm surge battered through barrier islands and wetlands before making landfall as a Cat 3.

[While this is a shining example of human/government idiocy and housing, and we should know better in the 20th century; it is not the same as New Orleans, where one of this country's larger cities exists because it is a major port, an established and convenient location for oil refinement and transportation, and central to US goods distribution.

Broad-sweeping statements regarding only remotely similar situations divert attention from these important distinctions that should shape whatever thinking goes into rebuilding the area.

Is it possible for the port to exist without the rest of the city?

Fair question, and the answer is probably - unlikely. The commercial port of NewOrleans was spared the destruction heaped on the city itself. The port directly or indirectly employs about more than 100,000 people. Remember, there is more to this than big ships being unloaded; 6 major railroads spur in NO and in today's collapsed supply chains, moving plants closer to materials actually promotes development in these locations.

So, it might be possible to move 300,000 - 400,000 people to safer "ground;" however, that seems improbable. It seems likely that someone has worked the numbers and determined that this is the problem we have, and we need to find a creative solution to provide better protection to NO.

Shifting gears for a moment; there are certainly motives beyond economics. We can't really abandon geography associated with risk as if it were a 10 year old car.

Thank you, this makes sense.

(I am not being sarcastic! It is a good point and very concise.)

They could have turned New Orleans into the U.S. version of Venice, Italy instead of trying to control the effects of weather and gravity.

Or at least that would have been cooler.

Ever smelled Venice? Horrible idea, actually.

Ever smelled Las Vegas?

Actually, Venice only "smells" during certain times of the year and even through that stench, it remains one the world's greatest cities full of treasure, and history, and art.

Venetians, and most of the world, understand the value and historical significance of Venice and continue to undertake whatever effort is necessary to protect it from destruction.

Just like "Vegas!"

Oh who cares. It's just a bunch of poor black people living there anyway.

Right?

I mean come on, it's not like it was New York or DC or LA or some important city.

You are of course right Nick. I apologize for once again being caught up in right and wrong and failing to subscribe to my national responsibility to exercise the freedom to be completely prejudicial.

Bye!

New Orleans turns into U.S. Venice idea.

I like it. I'm curious what, developmentally, made them go the "try and make a swamp into solid land" route instead of the Venice direction.

Your a piece of shit. I was one of the many people personally affected by the Katrina experience. Try walking 5 miles through vile water to a place of refuge that was in reality probably no better than the ruins that used to be your home were. Try being awake for 72 hours straight in the worst conditions imaginable and seeing small children dropping like flies around you the elderly dying in the horrid heat as we all waited for a sign that we were going to be rescued. Picture watching a mother try to throw her child off a parking garage because the stress of the situation has caused her to believe her child would be better off dead cause nobody was coming to rescue you. Have the horrible nightmares of what you've seen in that most horrific situiation.Imagine its almost a year and a half later and the place you called home was really no better off cause the government hasn't done a damn thing to repair it and your scattered away from your home in a place you really don't wanna be because you can't go home again cause home is in shambles. Wheres the repairs?...... it sounded good for the purposes of getting re-elected didn't it? New Orleans was and is truly one-of-a-kind and you CANNOT replace a city that was an means so much to so many. Yeah it was a black dominant city and you know what? You couldn't have that specialness, that uniqueness any other way.....You can't understand cause you weren't there, you didn't suffer in the least bit all the way in Arizona on your parents couch! Nobody but a true New Orleanian would understand what it means to truly love that city and would know the hellish misery it was like to watch that beloved jewel sink beneath both the waves of water and the waves of armchair politicians and self-styled know-it-alls who have NEVER experienced a real global tragedy such as this firsthand

Now punk shut up and play "Ducky Dress-Up" you wanna-be hipster.
