At an event ironically to celebrate free speech, former Congressional amphibian Newt Gingrich announced that free speech must be curtailed if we're to survive terrorism.

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a "different set of rules" may be needed to reduce terrorists' ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

"We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade," said Gingrich, a Republican who helped engineer the GOP's takeover of Congress in 1994.

Maybe since Gingrich left elected office he's been a little out of the loop on policy matters, but the whole "become a fascist state or the terrorists win" doctrine was tossed aside a few years ago by GOP strategists. Believe it or not, Americans, but even those who identify as Republicans prefer to keep their freedoms intact.

Another choice moment in Gingrich's speech came as he criticized the current partisan tone of Washington.

"Political parties in Presidential primary states should host events that invite candidates from both parties to discuss issues," said Gingrich, who criticized the sharpness of today's politics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it the Gingrich-led Congress of the mid-90s that gave Congress a good, hard shove into the current cesspool where it's residing? You know, the_impeaching Bill Clinton for no good reason_sort of thing? You reap what you sow, unfortunately, and if the new Democrat-led Congress isn't as friendly as someone like Gingrich would prefer, he should know where to place the blame.

I agree, we need to kill freedom! Then we can stuff it, mount it on our wall and show it to guests when they come over. It will last much longer this way.

But wait! There's more! Old Newt is also trying to get McCain-Feingold repealed because he believes that limiting campaign contributions is an infringement on free speech. So apparently, according to Mr. I left my wife while she had cancer for a newer model, free speech for the rich and corporate america is good but not for anyone else.

Where else would he protest free speech? He's demonstrating tact, that man, tact.

"You can't handle the speech."

Given the whole 'terrorists will use it against us', I'm sure he's all about the 'free-speech' zones that get erected in Bush's honor. Wait...no. I think he'd be for removing the zones. Not allowing free speech elsewhere, just removing the pesky zones that are just out of sight from everyone else.

so in a speech bemoaning the lack of first amendment protection in regards to certain groups (the rich, the christians and the rich christian politicians), newt also endorsed the limitation of the very same rights for the rest of the nation? the good news for newt: moronic statements are covered by the first amendment.

dear god this is a useless leader story? i am from NH and first of all this is embarassing that it happened in my state and secondly the union leader is as about a right wing news paper as you can get.... not that that has anything to do with this story. and on another COMPLETELY unrelated to this topic but related to the article...

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
newfound is my school district and i hope this type of thing doesn't happen elsewhere. that situation was almost equal to taking away ones right to vote. in my town meetings like this are important to letting the public's voice be heard be fore a decision is made and if discussions are being had and decissions made outside of these meetings without the publics voice and feelings being heard it becomes an almost dictatorial situation where decisions are made to please the rich and powerful few and not the many.

that aside...

this makes me sick and i'm glad the american public spoke up and said "NO! we will not give up our freedoms to further your neocon agenda."

This dude is one of the lead crackpots that has been hellbent on destroying the America we all learned to love and respect. Remember his uncontainable excitment at the prospects of a WWIII on the horizons a few months ago. His "Contract on America", his prosecuting Clinton for an act he was actually guilty of himself at the time. Big time creep is just a place to start with this guy. He can read, study and therorize untill we are all dead and still be just as sick and wrong as he is now. Must curtail free speech...like I am sure we will get it back later when we are safer. Must curtail free speech, well untill then Mr. Gingrinch it is my humble opinion you are UN-American and perhaps should seek your wretched conservative utopia somewhere else other than the land of the FREE and the home of the BRAVE!

Sirloins, thanks for your service Dude. Remember there is alot more to America than this political pervert, like all us SG members ARRR!!!

Welcome to Wingnut-o-Logic 101. In this class you will learn how rampant hypocrisy, a smug sense of superior moral right-ness, class-bating, fearmongering, and a refusal to actually take responsibility for documented failures and lies, are all virtues. Up is down. Black is white. UpTight is a politics editor.

How could we forget the Contract ON America, Newt? wink

When Republicans lie to the American people and the American people hold them accountable, the terrorists lose every time.

Iraq is an albatross around the neck of the Republican Party. It will only get worse for them if we continue on our present path, but they are in a state of denial.

When the Democrats take control of Congress, it is really time to pull the purse strings. The President thinks he can have his cake and eat it, too. Forget it. It's time to bring our boys home. The Iraqis don't want freedom. They want us to leave now and are reinforcing the insurgency.

The war against militant Islam is not over, but the Iraq War should become history--the sooner the better. It is time for our great nation to mend its wounds so we may fight another day. That is, fight in self defense and no longer in agression with no clear purpose but to fill the coffers of the military industrial complex and Bush's cronies in the oil industry.

No, no. Making UpTight a "politics editor" was an Orwellian fuck you to the liberals who make up 85-95% of the active people on the boards. It's nothing to do with wingnut-o-logic.

Right. I forgot. That's straight out of Petulant Whining College Republican Hackery 101. That class meets on Thursdays.
