DENVER -- A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He said some residents have also believed it was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said.

"Somebody could put up signs that say drop bombs on Iraq. If you let one go up you have to let them all go up," he said in a telephone interview Sunday.

Lisa Jensen said she wasn't thinking of the war when she hung the wreath. She said, "Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing."

Jensen, a past association president, calculates the fines will cost her about $1,000, and doubts they will be able to make her pay. But she said she's not going to take it down until after Christmas.

"Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied," she said. "What if they don't like my Santa Claus."

The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive."

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.

Kearns must be one of them mermenz.

That's so sad that a peace sign is considered "divisive," especially as part of a Christmas display...

I'd say a peace sign is perfectly appropriate as part of a Christmas display.

Thats one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard of.

I'd think that those with loved ones serving would embrace the concept with open arms.

The peace symbol can also be seen as the Nero's Cross, an upside down cross with the arms broken. Symbolizing the persecution and torture of Christians.

Anyone seeing that in this wreath is an idiot though.

Who cares if they would embrace the concept. A peace sign does not equal an anti-Iraq war poster.

Although I'm one of those godless lefties who hasn't been to Mass (outside of a friend's wedding or two) for a good 10-12 years, I've read the Bible many times (yes, the whole damn thing).

This helps me find the verses I like to use to call "good Christians" total hypocrites.

Wow. I really feel in the holiday spirit now. I have always thought it was rather macabre to have an execution device as the symbol of a major religion (think guillotine or hangman's noose), but the 'jew on a stick' crack is a lil out of line.

back to the topic - some people have waaaaay too much time on their hands and not nearly enough common sense.

Jesus. Are these people serious? I thought that that 'debate' (ahem) was settled twenty years ago.

sorry if that was offensive. It was intended as parody to soften a comment about something I feel strongly about.

OK, so it's pretty retarded that her housing association have jumped to such bizarre conclusions about a symbol that became hackneyed and meaningless by like, 1970 - but the fact that she is quite clearly both a hippy and a Christian make me loose quite a lot of sympathy for her.
