Ka-boom, motherfuckers.

The New York Times reports today that a federal government website intended to prove that going into Iraq was a good idea may be instrumental in blowing lots and lots of shit up.

The website, charmlessly titled the Operation Iraqi Freedom Document Portal, was originally meant as a repository for volumes of information about pre-war Iraq. The website contained every page in the 48,000 boxes of documents seized in Iraq since 2003 to allow diet coked-up amateur researchers sift through the documents, searching for evidence of a secret weapons program. The hope was they could find all the proof they needed to tell whiney anti-war nerds to shut the fuck up.

That didn't happen. Instead, experts noticed that the deluge of information included information about how to build a nuclear weapon from. Apparently, no one thought that posting Iraqi nuclear research from before the 1991 Persian Gulf War could have a negative effect. An unnamed senior American intelligence official quoted in the article said the information, described by the Times as "charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building," could aid countries with nuclear ambitions, like, say, Iran.

However, the information reportedly wouldn't be useful for terrorists or "poorly equipped" countries. So we've got that going for us. Which is nice.

According to the article, the atom bomb info wasn't the first time the site put information of mass destruction on the web; documents on manufacturing the fatal nerve agents tabun and sarin had been removed from the site after protests from U.N. officials.

The article isn't 100 percent clear on how recent the nerve agent information is, but says the nuclear program predated the 1991 gulf war. All in all, though, instead of being able to ladle out a steaming cup full of SFTU, the wingers who pushed for the now-offline website's creation should consider serving up a dainty teaspoon of "oops."

Anyone who wants to know how to build a nuke can get the information from all over the place. It's not like they left radioactive material lying around for people to take.

I'm more worried about groups like Aum Shin Rikyo making -and dispersing- anthrax.

shocked eeek Information is one thing, but technical know-how is an entirely different matter. What does it matter now anyways? The real threat is "global" terrorism, that's why were in Iraq. Oh shit. I meant to say WMD's, that's why we're in Iraq... (cough)(cough)North Korea(cough) Crap, that's not it... Why are we in Iraq again? blackeyed

Direction for making an atomic bomb were published in Progressive magazine in the mid-1970s. Further information, provided by reknown Los Alamos bomb designer Theodore Taylor, was published in the John McPhee book "The Curve of Binding Energy" in 1975 That book included information on how to create a crude nuclear bomb in your kitchen.

In other words, the know-how has been available in the public domain for decades. Carrying out the creation of a bomb, though, must be stupendously difficult, considering the fact that so few nations are known to have such a capability.

I challenge you to find and link to schematics for a nuclear bomb. If it's in the public domain, prove it.

Google: How to build a nuclear bomb.

The tricky part of building a nuclear bomb is containing the explosion long enough to get a high yield. If you have seen programs on TV about the Manhatan Project, they describe the problem quite well.

If I remember rightly, the magazine New Scientist published an article on how to make a nuclear bomb in the 80's. And not a lot of people know that.

One last link about our numb nuts disclosures.

OK,so some of the info exists, scattered about the Internet and in old magazines, but this is a fuck up, right? I mean, from an administration which classifies and declassifies documents pureley for political reasons; one which calls for the criminal prosecution for reporters that dare to let the cat out of the bag that terrorist phone calls are monitored? (Duh).

I guess I think the powerful think we're all pretty stupid. But damn, the republicans count on it!

I asked for schematics. I did not ask to be pointed to a one page essay about how to build a nuclear bomb.

Atomic bombs are simple to make if you have enough fissile material. You take two hemi-spheres and use explosives to mash them together, or you have a sphere with a plug cut out and use a "gun" to fire the plug back into the hole.

enriching the fissile material enough, and making better use of the fissile material, is problematic.

From the last URL in my previous post.

The obsessively secretive Ministry of Defence has placed a step-by-step guide on how to build an atomic bomb in Britain's Public Record Office.

It has also released a file describing how such a bomb could be smuggled in.

There are complete cross-sections, precise measurements and details of the materials used for all the components of the first British bomb, including the two key parts - the plutonium core and the initiator that sets off the chain reaction to cause the blast.

The plans, available to all comers, are contained in files released over the past five years.

They would enable a terrorist to make an atomic bomb without difficulty, says a retired engineer who worked on the British atomic weapons program.

I hope that this information is not on the Internet, but this article describes the public availability of the plans to make a bomb. You might think that our government would not have been so stupid to put these plans into the pubic domain...
