Second, just to make sure we're all on the same sheet of bullshit here, I feel I should point out that Vietnam was a Liberal (mis) adventure that makes anything going on in Iraq or Afghanistan look like a rough night at a frat house.

Yes. How fondly I remember those anti-war protests led by such stalwart conservative groups as the young republicans. And how much support there was for the war from the left wing. I remember the young hippie girls who practically raised me often talked about how important it was that we keep Vietnam safe from communism no matter what it cost. surreal

So, correct me if I'm wrong, the majority of the US military is made up from lower socio-economic groups and minority ethnic groups.

What Kerry said was correct? No?

Lynddie England, Timothy McVeigh ..... the messenger has been killed delivering the message.

Come on America and the Democrats, get a REAL leader - the world needs you.

I don't know, it sounds like he's telling Democrats to get a "REAL leader," as though Kerry has been anything but "just another senator" to the party since, oh, about December 2004. If that's what he meant, he clearly knows nothing about current American politics or the current state of the Democratic Party.

I'm no expert in Aussie, but it read (to me) as though he was basically saying "isn't Kerry right?", and then just kind of threw in the "REAL leader" thing as a shot at the W, who is quite an unreal leader.

I'm not married to this interpretation. I just wanted to see what optimism felt like.

Kerry is an ineffectual speaker but it amazes me how our media will hop on such pecadillos and play referee for endless hours of TV news time.

Wouldn't it be great if we had a media that would say:

"Kerry was obviously referring to the fact that our military is disproportionately made up of working class people who, regardless of their opinions about the war, join the military largely out of economic necessity. Isn't it sad that the people who die for us, largely die because they are the underclass, just as they will suffer a much slower death at home in factories, working for a non-working wage without adequate health benefits and no hope of advancement for them or their children."

"Isn't it sad that, though a few really smart (or fortunate) working class people will escape to the middle class, that most of them will keep producing working class children, who will then produce working class children."

"Isn't it sad that that many smart people are working for minimum wage because there are no good jobs in their cities or because, even though they may be smart, they are not smart or savvy enough to turn that smart-ness into a good wage. And isn't it sad that even if you are not 'smart,' but just hard-working, that you can't make a decent wage. Isn't it sad that many people who are rich are actually very dumb, or just born into wealth, or had a great deal of help. Isn't it sad?"

One silver lining from this is that Kerry's probably throwing in the towel for 2008 as a result.

Most Democrats don't really want him back as the nominee in 2008. So the brief time of Bush actually getting something in that anyone wanted to hear was probably worth the small costs in the 2006 mid-term elections. Kerry has a huge war chest and name recognition.

you know....
if you read the prepared speech transcript, it says:

If you don't, you get us stuck in Iraq....

as in, 'the president is dumb'

the man missed one word while reading off of a screen.
anyone here do any public speaking? Sometimes you read your notes wrong...
Is this really a big deal?....

If anyone listens to the massive republican 'just before the election' spin they are putting on this.....then they are stoopid.

not only is pretty much everything in this statement incorrect...
but at least Vietnam was the fuck up of MANY presidents. And that was ONE war.
Bush has got into TWO.
