As I didn't hear the entire interview, I don't yet know what her full reasoning was, but whatever the case, it ends up being a powerful statement and some of the best true art I've heard of in a long time. I really don't see what everyone is so disturbed by. Of course, it would have made more of a statement if she had buried it outside of Bush's front gate, but it's in the same zipcode and that works.
Almost everyone involved with this site does what could be called 'mutillation' to their own bodies; I don't see what's so sickening about taking something that was a part of you and, rather than having it thrown in the garbage, performing some act with it that has meaning for you and, perhaps, other people as well.

Let's be honest here folks. Cindy Sheehan is protesting the death of a son that she willingly gave up and walked away from. She has had almost no contact with him since she gave him up for a man. And from what I understand he was not the only child that she walked away from. This woman is a straight up wack job. Doesn't anyone wonder how this woman has all this time to camp out in front of the Presidents house while the rest of us have to go to work each and every day?

I don't know all that to be fact but I have read it in several places.

I know all of that to be untrue, in fact. I just love the internet rumour mill, it just keeps turning out the same old garbage no matter how many times you empty the can.

Her son was a chaplain and had been one for an entire tour of duty, none of which was in Iraq. He was given incentives to rejoin including the promise of money for more religious schooling. At the beginning of his second tour, for reasons even the army cannot explain, he was sent to Iraq and reassigned to the infantry and survived less than three weeks.

If you're going to tell someone else that they're wrong, you should at least be right.

Casey Sheehan was never a chaplian. It would be impossible for him to be one. He was a Specialist (an enlisted rank) and chaplains must be officers. To be an officer (medical related fields excluded) you have to have a BA. He had the hopes of becoming a chaplain's assistant. At the time of his death he worked on Jeeps and such. He was a vehicle mechanic.

Almost all soldiers are given incentive to re-up. Spc Sheehan wasn't lied to about a reenlistment bonus. He was told by his recruiter that the Army would give him $20,000 to enlist originally. Airmen will get $10,000 to switch from the AF to the Army. Recruiters lie. That's what they do. All five services' recruiting fields are being investigated and change to prevent that from happening in the future. Yes, the Army promised him money for school. It wasn't a false promise either. DoD offers 100% tuition assistance right now. They will pay for you to go to school (given you have the time and the ability). With the G.I. Bill, you can actually be paid to go to school. I'm hoping to start in some of the classes Sheehan was hoping to take.

What is this "for reasons even the army cannot explain, he was sent to Iraq?"

I can explain it now. Specialist Sheehan was a soldier. The Army sent his unit to Iraq, so he had to go with them. In the Army, unless you are a chaplian or medic, you are a Soldier first. If called upon, you are expectedl pick up a gun and fire, like the man next to you. Basically, you can be reverted back to a grunt at any time.

If you are right, then you are right, I was just relaying the condensed story Cindy Sheehan had told on the radio, and now that you mention it, she did say chaplians assistant and not chaplain.

And I know you can be called into the infantry at any time. The point is at the time the president said things were going swimmingly in Iraq while in one particular case this man served for a very short period of time before being killed.
I was not meaning to say that this has never happened before, I am saying that his mother has a very natural reaction to go "Uhh, WTF?!"

People do bizarre things. Eric Estrada keeps his son's umbillical cord in a little gold box he wears on a chain around his neck. Some people speak in toungues. Some people eat their placenta on pizza (yummy after-birth!). Some people stick their bodies with needles and inject ink under their skin. Some people have parts of their bodies removed. We live in a wierd world, who are we to judge... Oh wait, did you say uterus? puke Weird, but not really worth the additional attention she's gotten.

If I do, will a new gallbladder sprout from them?

I wonder who history will judge more harshly: this grieving (and yes, rather unstable and annoying) mother who jumpstarted the anti-war movement in America and tried to dismantle an administration descending into fascism... or the rest of us who did nothing at all but sit back and watch the whole thing as entertainment and occasionally bitch about it on our fucking computers.

Speak for yourself if you did nothing.
Not everyone did nothing.
Not everyone went insane and started having body parts removed for auction or ceremonial burial, but it doesn't mean they did nothing.
Geesh.

Thank you, you horrible fucking monster. The reason there is not a uterus graveyard in every city is because we don't bury them. Hospitals take care of that little problem. You don't have to handle it yourself.

Hopefully Miss Body Organ Burier will be arrested because it is illegal in Texas to put your uterus in a hole in the ground where any motivated possum or raccoon can dig it up and have a feast. Can someone please stop the hippies?

Who appointed you keeper of public morals?

Where she is buried and which parts are buried where, as long as she owns the property or has the consent of the owner, and it does not violate health regs, is up to her as far as I am concerned.

hhhmmm have something such as your uterus thrown away in the garbage amongst filth or bury in a place of your choosing for sentimental value.(whatever that may be).....i'd choose.......... putting underground. who the fuck cares what she did with her own uterus? i'm sure its not in a public park right next to a playground or in some random person's back yard. whatever

Maybe if you read the article you would have realized that it IS illegal and against health regulations. There are some fairly tight standards for the disposal of medical waste. Planting it in your garden is not one of those standards from what I've heard, even if you own the garden.

I read the article, including the (very) selective quotes of Texas laws. They assume too much, the law gives a lot more slack in very rural low population density areas. Crawford is way the hell out in the sticks, the closest moderatly large town is Waco which is about 15 miles away, the closest big city is Fort Worth which is about 100 miles away. Out in very rural Texas the law does not forbid private grave yards. Now they are supposed to be marked as I recall, and have a minimum depth of burial, and maybe she broke the law in that way, but that it would not be a grevious offence if she did as long as no other crime (like a murder) was associated with it, she might get a fine.

If she buried them deep enough, then I doubt it is even a technical violation, as it is not technically a grave as in has a dead person in it.

If it is against health regulations given the very low population density, and the fact the tissue was buried, it is government being a busybody.

And the garden is way the hell out in the sticks and you bury it deep enough?

One the things that ticked me off most about Louisiana laws is that when my mother died, we had to use an official legal licensed herse to take her to the state line where once in Texas they were allowed to move her casket to my stepfather's truck and then he could drive the rest of the way to outside Roswell New Mexico for her burial in our family plot.

That was nothing but a shake down by the funeral home industry.
