I don't understand why we don't just give all the money that is being spent on pointless shit like fenses, extra border guards, etc to companies like Haliburton and send them down to Mexico to do the same thing they're doing in Iraq.

Have them go into all these little villages in Mexico that are dirt poor and build wells, water systems, electrical systems, new houses, roads, etc. If we could do more to bring the Mexican standard of living up to our own, we wouldn't have to worry about enforcing the border. It would be like our border with Canada.

Instead we insist on letting the 2nd world country to our south STAY a 2nd world country.

No. The fact that it's dangerous and could get you killed should serve as a deterrent. Mexico did it because they love their remittances.

It should serve as a deterrent. You're right. The fact that it does not should give you some hint as to how desperately these people need to make that crossing.

If you decide to make the trek across the US-Mexico border, knowing that several people have died attempting it, then yes, if you end up dying, you deserve it. The Mexican government should have made everyone aware of the risks, not handed out pamphlets as to how to do it safely.

puke

Do you realize what kind of logic that is? Let me give you another (fictitious) sample:

"If you decide to join the US military, knowing that you will most likely be sent to Iraq where thousands of soldiers have died in the ongoing insurgency, if you end up dying, you deserve it."

Fuck that. These are human beings. If a cheap paper pamphlet can save their lives, I am all for it.

You know what will save their lives? The Mexican government getting its head out of its ass and cleaning itself up. The Mexican government has no business telling its nationals how to break our laws.

Wow! You are sounding a awful lot like a Johnson liberal here. You should be careful.

I agree with you, though I would stay away from Halliburton. Unless of course you are talking about contaminated wells, faulty electric, falling down houses and crumbling roads - all done at three times the price one would pay for actual competent work from a reputable contractor.

I honestly doubt the government would check for tunnels with any rigor. The move to build the wall seems to be a political move, so I doubt the government is really concerned with whether or not the wall works. Furthermore, I would imagine that state government would handle a lot of the policing functions and I don't suspect that many of the states involved are willing to set aside large amounts of their budget for policing the wall.

Given the quality of work the US is "rebuilding" Iraq (like the 70 million dollar Police headquarters that will have to be torn down and rebuilt,) I expect that what will happen here is that the wall will only be half built after 12 years and 100 billion in cost overruns. And that part will fall down after a few years.

That's definitely a good goal, but it's not a process of a few days. That sort of thing takes years or even decades. Meanwhile, people are going to keep sneaking across the border, and the fewer of them that die in ways that we could have prevented, the better.

And they already know how to "break our laws", as the presence of millions of them in our country shows.
