Hey dudes, is this the thread where we make political statements in poor taste about an extremely recent tragedy? Excellent!

would you rather we wait until this happens again? something need's to change here, it was way to easy for this guy to do what he did and the fact that he was the only person armed around all those kids scares the shit out of me.

The obvious answer is to let more young men carry weapons. What could possibly go wrong?

Yeah just look how well teaching our kids to do nothing and wait their turn to be shot has worked...

I'm starting to think that ALGERNON may be a real thing

from the Wikipedia listing for the Anime "Betterman"

Victims of Algernon show symptoms like those in the end chapters of "Flowers for Algernon," (loss of intellect and emotional control) but on a larger, more violent scale. Rage isn't the only symptom, as insanity and bodily mutation are evident in many cases.

I'm not trying to make light of this horrid act but the description does seem to fit the profile of a school shooter (for the most part)

I must've missed that class. My first reaction upon seeing a gun is running very, very fast in the other direction. Of course these poor kids were sitting down in a classroom when a gunmen simply walked in and started shooting without saying a word so neither of our analogies really fit now do they?

Err...it did happen. It the state with the (some of the) most lenient gun laws in the country. Did you miss that part?

WTF are you talking about? anyone in VA can get a gun. that's not the fucking issue, and it's more than a little distasteful for you to blame the victims for not being armed before they're even in the ground. A little less internet tough guy posturing, please.

Here's the thing: this happened in a state where guns are totally accessible by everyone, so what the fuck are you complaining about? Guns in VA=Easy to get. Not just for one young man. For everyone. VA is pretty much the holy land for gun owners.

im just curious about how difficult it is for a law abiding citizen to obtain a weapon in other states that may have stricter gun laws. what makes virginia so special?

Well, I know you don't need a license, no waiting period, and there's no concealed weapons rules.

I'm not trying to get in a gun rights debate, but this guy claiming that this could have been prevented with less stringent gun control sort of misses the point by a wide margin. VA is gun-friendly, not gun-restrictive.

god man this is NOT TRUE ON SCHOOL GROUNDS, for some reason psychos seem to like the fact that there are large groups of unarmed people to shoot at, how many times does this type of thing have to happen before people realize that THERE SHOULD BE NO PLACE WHERE GOOD PEOPLE ARE GUARANTEED TO BE UNARMED it just makes no sense.

massacres typically happen to unarmed people, i am in no way blaming the victims, i just cant get out of my mind how horrifying it must be to hear gunshots and screams in a "gun free zone" which means there will be nobody around to help you for a while not a security guard not a prepared professor, not a student with a CCW nobody.

(emphasis added)

Virginia Tech has it's own police department, as do most major universities.
The officers of the VTPD carry sidearms.

no you seem to think that the average person does whatever he sees in video games when its the opposite most people if given proper training in firearms safety are safer with guns than without, my point is if someone is responsible enough to get a license to cary a firearm they are the kind of person i would want around in a situation like this

talk about sinking in? what do you not understand about the fact that there are people who prepare for this kind of thing that are forced to leave their weapons at home or face expulsion?

do you remember being a college freshman? or a college student? most of them are not all that mature yet. i actually had forgotten how young college kids are until i started seeing them being interviewed on TV yesterday. university students are 17-24 or so for the most part. they're still KIDS, barely grown-ups. just starting to make their way in the world.

half of university students are too young to buy alcohol. they are barely out of high school. you think they should all walk around small town american campuses with GUNS to protect themselves? how about 18 year old seniors in high school? oh wait--maybe we should change the laws to allow 16 year olds to bring guns to school since there are HIGH SCHOOL shootings as well. or heck-- maybe some of the more responsible 10 year olds. they could take a special test and be voted on by the other kids and teachers to protect the kids in their class!

im not talking about people who are not old enough to carry im talking about people who are why should they have to depend on campus PD? im not just talking about students either im sure there are school staff members / security with permits to cary why should it be publicly announced that they cant cary at work?

And what do you not understand about the fact that if it were nigh impossible in this country to obtain a firearm, people wouldn't need to prepare for this kind of thing.
What do you not understand about the fact that most people do not want to prepare for this kind of thing. Most people just want to live their lives without having to worry about a mentally unstable person having access to deadly weaponry.
