I actually just found out today that Mogwai put out an album this year. I would expect this to be pretty damn good and the two tracks I did hear support that assumption. How the hell was this so overlooked?
Edited because I should have payed more attention to the post by Takeahnase above.

Looking at this thread, I realized I've heard maybe two or three new albums this year, and none of them really made an impression. When did I stop liking music?
Ani DiFranco-Reprieve
Ray LaMontagne-Till the Sun Turns Black
Tool-10,000 Days
Regina Spector-Begin to Hope
Thom York-The Eraser
The Mars Volta-Amputechture
The Strokes-First Impressions of Earth
Gnarls Barkley has been my all-around "pick of the year" at work. mostly because almost everyone will love it so it's a quick and easy recommendation (and much easier to describe to customers than most of what i like).
otherwise...
Regina Spektor/Begin to Hope (i wish i'd "decided to like her" sooner, i sure do love her now)
Dresden Dolls/Yes Virginia (everything they do is wonderful)
Giant Squid/Metridium Fields (i really love this cd and i want it and the band to do well because it's made such an impression on me, but it's hard to play for people since it requires a quiet environment and some alone-time to enjoy, not to mention it's one of those albums that takes a couple of plays to get used to)
Muse/Black Holes and Revelations (kind of "over" them now but still find their songs in my head from time to time and i don't mind)
Mars Volta/Amputechture (just bought it, still geting used to it but i love them)
Lupe Fiasco/Food and Liquor (i haven't enjoyed another hiphop album period this year, but this is GOOD, plus no annoying skits which is my biggest problem with mainstream rap albums)
Stolen Babies/There Be Squabbles Ahead (fun screamy almost circusy music)
i still need to hear more of Thom Yorke's album - i was bored by it on first listen but i love his voice. i was unimpressed by Tool's latest but i'm not a Tool fan anyway. i can't figure out what people see in the Yeah Yeah Yeah's new one - their first album is one of my all-time favorites and it's like they sucked all the fun out of it. no more screaming garage band sound = no more best thing they had going for them. my coworkers mistakenly assumed i was an Ani fan and i ended up with the promo of Reprieve in my box at work...i don't have anything against the girl but i don't recall her older stuff as being that boring.

Yeah, I hear you. I've seen quite a few I liked posted by others (Built to Spill, Jenny Lewis, Mastodon, TV on the Radio etc), but mostly I've stayed out of new music this year, for some bizarre reason. I do plan on picking up The Silversun Pick-ups and Dirty on Purpose soonish, though.
Albums I've liked this year:
The Scissor Sisters-Ta Da!
The Decemberists-The Crane Wife
Muse-Blacks Holes and Revelations
Gnarls Barkley-St. Elsewhere
Kaki King-When We Feel Red
Feist-Open Season
If we're going to go with singles, I have to say "When You Were Young" by the Killers. The rest of the album was so dissapointing.
Fiery Furnaces - Bitter Tea
Charlotte Gainsbourg - 5:55
Spank rock - yoyoyoyoyo
Envelopes - Demon
Nouvelle Vague - Bande a Part
The Mammals - Departure (the "Come As You Are" cover alone is worth it)
I'm from Barcelona - Let Me Introduce My Friends
Radiohead - Bonnaroo 6-17-06 (Can this count? It was recorded this year and I got it on CD this year. I still smile each time I listen to "House of Cards" at the end.)
I also enjoyed The Crane Wife, Ys, The Eraser and the Arctic Monkeys. And "Fulwood Babylon" by The Long Blondes - I've been dancing to it for months…
Someone to drive you home - The Long Blondes
With strings - Eels
Howling Bells - Howling Bells
Show your bones - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Welcome to the black parade - My Chemical Romance
Costello music - The Fratellis
Best re-issues of the year have got to go to His and Hers, Different class and this is hardcore by Pulp. The bonus tracks make three amazing albums even better.
He Is Legend - Suck Out The Poison
(which turned me on to their previous release I Am Hollywood...extremely thankful for that )
Dog Fashion Disco - Adultery
and after reading through this thread......i'm hitting the cd shop on the way home and grabbing Mastodon - Blood Mountain.....fuckin saw it like a dozen times
Current 93 - Black Ships Ate The Sky
Man Man - six demon bag
World/Inferno Friendship Society - Red Eyed Soul
Joanna Newsom - Ys
NoMeansNo - All Roads Lead to Ausfahrt
Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead
Subtle - For Hero: For Fool
Genghis Tron - Dead Mountain Mouth
