Metric frontwoman Emily Haines has revealed to Billboard that the band has begun work on their third full-length LP, and that it's taking a decidedly mellow turn.

"We're making up lots of music in a bit mellower vibe. It's always nice to check yourself, see if you can explore different moods as a writer"

Haines says she believes her recent relaxed and airy solo album, Knives Don't Have Your Back, has affected the writing of new Metric material, though it's too early too tell how the finished product will sound.

"I can already see how my work on 'Knives' has affected the direction of the next Metric record, which is cool...but we'll probably do so many songs, who knows how the final record will sound."

Metric spent this past month in a studio in Seattle working on the follow up to 2005's Live It Out, but won't be back in the studio until March to allow for Haines solo tour, which begins January 4th, and a handful of UK Metric Dates supporting Bloc Party.

WHAAAAAT?!

This potentially displeases me. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Maybe it'll be extra awesome... But mellow is not what I look for from Metric.

Both Metric albums are briliant . All the twists and turns make for many repeated listenings. "Knives" is phenominal. These are artists- so each record will be different and evolved. Like it should be.

The first release, Static Anonymity, is just an EP so kremlock is correct in saying "both albums".

No, he's not.

There's Grow Up and Blow Away, Old World Underround, annnnnd Live It Out. God.

And there were not one but two EPs. The other being Metric's first release, Mainstream.

Yr absolutely right.... HOWEVER, Grow Up was never officially released and won't be released MAYBE until next year AND Metric refers to Old World as their debut full-length....

If you dig around there also seems to be an unreleased, or unofficially released Emily Haines solo album that predates Knives.

Oh yeah, if anyone does have a link to get that Smith cover I would be grateful. I will probably dig one up somewhere but my time might be saved... who knows.

After the last album, I'm not super excited about a new Metric release. I've listened to her solo project and while I do like the mellow, softer side of it, it all starts sounding the same.

Though I still like Knives Don't Have Your Back, I agree. The first three or four tracks tend to be the best of the experience, and I lose interested after those ones. They also seem to have higher production applied to them, the ones after that seem a bit stripped down in comparison.

I'll still pick up the new album though.
