If I want to hear Puppets again, I'll press the repeat button. Artists who churn out the same shit (albeit, good shit) over and over just piss me off. Grow, expand, take a chance! St. Anger was in my opinion, a BIG chance so I applaude them for that. Putting out an album after losing 25% of the tallent, almost loosing another 25%, being in a holding pattern for so long and changing the traditional structure and sound of your music (vocal arrangements, nixing the solos, and that retarded "pong" sound of the snare), is a big, bold move.

Here's where I put my foot in my mouth and be a total hypocrite...

Keep it real while at the same time, taking it to the next level...

Keeping it real:

Bring back the solo's.
Loose the retarded snare sound.
Understand that collaberative lyric writing does not work in this band.
Take St. Anger and put it on a shelf...a very, very high shelf, look at it, adore it, have fond memories for it and then forget about it. Sometimes "chances" don't work out.

Take it to the next level:

Take everything pre St. Anger and put it in a blender.
Then vaporise it and inhale deeply.
Give Trujillo the space he needs and deserves.
CHECK YOUR EGOS AT THE DOOR.
Make Newstead wish he hadn't left the band.

And that's the world as I see it.

In comparison to most of the heavy rock records that have been out in the past few years, I'd say it's a pretty fucking good record.

This statement reveals why you're so clearly confused. You're comparing St. Anger to all the other sonic crap floating around in the toilet today. We're comparing it to what Metallica have done and are capable of doing again...kicking our asses! The difference is glaringly obvious.

Nope, I'm right there with you.

Unfortunately, I doubt SG is the hangout of most hardcore Metallica fans so we probably won't find many others who share that liking...

And that is exactly why you shouldn't venture out there...into the "hardcore" hangouts. It's safer for you here.

Like i said before, It's good for bands to experiment and take a chance. Just have the stones to stand up and dust yourselves off and admit that it didn't work. Pick another direction.

I just expect better than what they've done in the last 15 years or so. Sorry, but as a fan I expect progression, not repeated regression. I remember when Master came out, it was fuckin great, and when And Justice came out, it was pretty good, then they did the Black album. I thought it sucked. And then they did Load, that sucked too, then etc..Havent really liked anything from the and St. Anger was the capper, God awful in mu opinion. I expected better from them, sorry they set their own bar too high. But it says something to me when all the best stuff had either Mustaine or Burton in the credits. The control freak attitude has had its effect I believe as well. Maybe they should have let Jason contribute more, that might have opened up the writing process a bit... Doesnt matter too much in the scheme of things, but makes good cyber babble I guess. But sure they have the right to be as mediocre as they want to be, if thats what they want to be in a large amount of their former fan base's opinion then I guess they will be content counting their millions. But money aint everything to me. And Ill never stop dreaming and aspiring to do better myself, thats just the way I am.

It'll switch from Suck to Blow at every other song. It'll continue to do this until they A: Realize their fifteen minutes are up and sometimes you can never go home... or B: All eat a bullet for the sake of Metal and all that is good in this world.
I think it's time for these guys to take one for the team, don't you?

This post hurts my face.

And videos of some of the new songs being played live have been available for a while - and they suck. RIP, once mighty thrash gods. You should've quit while you were ahead.

Hell yeah, I expect to be impressed...maybe you just prefer to settle for too little? Your remark makes no fucking sense to me. Do you just listen to whatever the radio plays? I hate radio for that mentality so much, they tend to play the shit out of the middle of the road over and over. How many times do I have to hear fuckin Paranoid and Iron Man when I KNOW Into The Void, Tomorrows Dream, and The Writ are right there for the taking? I remember when stations used to sneak in 2112 from time to time instead of playing friggin Tom Sawyer every day. Sure I expect something, ESPECIALLY if Im putting my money down. Otherwise my money goes somewhere else. and once Metallica put oout the Black Album it did. Maybe you can eat oatmeal for dinner every day...Id like a juicy steak here and there.
And as for SLAYER, they are the exception to this discussion. I never expect them to go anyhere beyond balls out riffs and drum lines. Thats just what they do. If I wanted progression I would listen to Meshuggah. But God Hates Us All was a great record, in my opinion. Havent given the new one too much of a listen yet so I cant make a judgement. But with Lombardo back I cant see it sucking or anything.
and Megadeth has sucked since Rust in Peace, I thnk Mustaine ran out of riffs after Metallica used most of em...

I don't ever expect/demand to be impressed...every band that I like, I appreciate everything that they put out, regardless of what anyone else thinks, and am very thankful that they do it. yeah, there may be a song or an album that I don't quite like, but I'll still listen to it. And to go off on a little tangent, that's what i think it means to be a true fan.

Metallica hasn't had a decent record since '89. Besides, as long as Lars is in the band, I see no good reason to throw money their way.

Yeah, I'm not sure either. Must have been the caffeine. Actually, now that I've given what you wrote more thought, I think you've confused the term "hardcore" with "devoted". Devoted Metallica fans will defend St. Anger a hell of a lot faster than the hardcore will...if at all. Kill'Em All, Ride, Puppets, Justice...those are hardcore albums. Black, Load and Reload are all progressively more commercial and less hardcore. St. Anger was an accidental experiment I think. It was the band getting back on its feet. That, or the next album will be G rated and be shelved right between Luba and Nazareth.

we are very different. I can still listen to Kiss Alive, but everything from Love Gun on makes me sick. I am alot more passionate about what I like and dislike obviously. So when a band I like puts out crap, like Raven did after All For One, I dont bother with it. I wont buy what I think is crap, just cause I liked their last album, seems kind of weak to me. Nor would I expect people to buy my stuff if it was crap. Im that way with anything, movies, music, my photos, my articles I write, construction, food, etc...whatever Im into I guess. Must be nice to be that easily appeased...

And to go off on yer tangent, thats what it means to be a true fan of music to me. Regardless to what anyone else thinks....

The problem is Hetfield's voice. It's just not good. Or musical. His voice was different on the records pre-Black Album and it worked and fit the music. Once he strated "singing" I lost interest....just like Anthony Kiedis. At least they aren't yarling...or are they?

The first three albums were incredible. I agree with the other posts that mentioned how much they changed after Cliff died. Cliff was obviously the soul of the band. I gave away all of my Metallica cds and tapes after I saw Lars on tv with the stack of pages of people they were sueing during the napster ordeal. They went from being the greatest thrash band ever to sueing their own fans. Seriously, how can you care that much about money when you have so much already? Metallica are the biggest sellouts in the history of music, and I will never spend another penny so Lars can buy more solid gold tennis rackets.

For the love of fuck......

After, what, 5-6 years you'd think people could get their shit straight. Metallica never sued their fans. Metallica never sued a single person who downloaded one of their songs, they sued Napster. Big difference.

Biggest sellouts in the history of music? Excuse me? When was the last time you heard a Metallica song being used on a car commercial? Or to sell computers or color printers? Yeah, they have an absurd amount of merchandise. Big deal. So would any other band that had the fan base they do.

Lastly, the term "sell out" is rediculious when applied to music. Once a band releases an album for sale their music becomes a product. Thus any band that has ever signed a contract is a sell out.

I like some of it, and I like what it could have been. But the production is unexcuseable.

I have been there since Kill Em All, in case anybody was wondering... which I doubt, but I thought I should clarify. I saw them open for Ozzy in 1985 (when people were more excited to see Metallica).

i'm a huge tallica fan, and thought ST Anger was he biggest piece of shit on earth when it was released. but I adore it now, once i got over the production sound and listened to it properly i realised its a fucking good record. not as good as the old shit but certainly still godly!! tongue and it stands for alot too (but only the band and fans can appreciate that part i guess)

Metallica have had their issues over the years but i firmly believe theyve found their way back. have a little faith guys, the four horsemen wont let you down!

They still kicked major arse at Download this year, and the new shit sounded like the old stuff. It'll be good to have them back.

I guess the thing I'll never understand about them is that they were already selling out large arenas on the Justice for all tour . Why they felt the need to go to a more mainstream sound , I'll never know . I mean , you're already making damn good money , so that shouldn't have been a reason . They had songs being played on the radio & MTV . So it's not like they needed more recognition . I don't know , I think they just lost something . They lost their soul , & his name was Cliff .
