That's what I was going to go with. Not only one of the greatest sad songs ever, but one of my favorite NIN tracks, and that's saying something.

The version of Pushit from Salival always hits me hard too :sniff:

I found the versions by both Billie Holiday and NIna Simone and they were both very good. But I think I like the Josh White version better.

Hat tip to Stosbet and ElysianZero for pointing these out to me.

a tie between:

"And All That Could Have Been" - NIN

and

Barber's "Adagio For Strings, Op.11" performed by Agnus Dei and the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge.

the first fills my heart with leaded memories and the second literally brings me to tears every time i listen to it with it's utterly overpowering, haunting beauty. i started crying a little just thinking about it, and i'm normally fairly stoic.

His heartbreak is so raw and it's like, every other song. Love, love, love.

This:

The music is "Gortoz a Ran" by Denez Prigent (I think). From "Blackhawk Down".

The letter is actually from a real letter written by the Union Soldier Captain Sullivan Ballou to his wife Sarah, shortly before his death at the battle of Bull Run in the Civil War.
