The kid who died was trying to save one of his friends from being killed.

Hilarious! Can't wait to see what zingers everyone can come up with for that one!

I'm not going to lie, I'm saddened by the death of the tiger and indifferent to the individuals mauled by the animal.
The cops did what they felt they had to do when they confronted a 300lb. carnivore.
These animals are pretty much at the end of their existence. They're hunted in the wild (what little wilderness they have left to themselves) for ridiculous reasons and they're not safe in captivity. I'm finding it really hard to find anything funny in any part of this incident.

If you are one of the posters in this thread who believes that these three boys "had it coming to them" because they MIGHT have foolishly taunted the tiger . . .

Would you also believe that a woman wearing sexy clothing and dancing suggestively at a party is at fault if she becomes a victim of rape?

Blaming the victim is reprehensible, regardless of circumstance. I'd bet good money that the same people dissing those poor mauled kids would scream bloody murder if we were instead faulting a rape victim for "asking for it."

Not that taunting a 300-lb fucking TIGER is a brilliant plan . . .

I thought the whole lex talionis thing had been pretty much universally ruled out as an irrational, primitive and most rudimentary form of "justice". I can't imagine what the tiger was thinking because our brain functions in a much more complex way than theirs, misanthropy is a very good example of this.

Zoos are an imperfect solution to a problem created unwittingly by the growth of human society. It's not like our ancestors realized, "Hey, if we keep up this civilization thing, we are going to create all sorts of ecological problems! Think of the animals! Let's stay hunter-gatherers!"

However, when you come up with a better solution and a viable plan to put it into action, let me know. Zoos, on the whole, do more for animal conservation than any and all of the "oh noes, zooz are so crul" type folk I've ever known.

Tigers living in cages IS sad. Siberian tigers becoming extinct because no one cares would be even sadder.

ohhh.... it makes me sad that they killed it! stupid cops with no tranq darts!!! (and I know they were doing their job to save people lives... but still, endangered species here!!! and we are sooooooo far from that.)
It does seem a bit fishy or retarded or something that this tiger has escaped on more that one occasion. Does the zoo have a history of animal escapes in general, I wonder, and if so? what sort of cheap wack jobs are running the joint???

just some of my sleepy brained thoughts.... frown

From today's NYT

By CAROLYN MARSHALL
Published: December 29, 2007
Police officials in San Francisco said that an investigation had "found absolutely no evidence of an intentional release" of the Siberian tiger that escaped its enclosure at the city's zoo on Tuesday, killing a young man and seriously injuring two others. The police said investigators had yet to determine whether "other criminal conduct" occurred either before or after the mauling. Zoo officials announced that the zoo would remain closed until Jan. 3, but said they had not determined whether the lion and tiger exhibit would reopen then.

Emphasis mine

Sigh. The tiger DID NOT escape twice. It had earlier injured a zookeeper during a feeding time. Read the news articles. Hell, just read the earlier posts in the thread.

Yeah, stupid cops. They should have run and got some tranqs while the tiger mauled some more people. WTF?!?!

They should kill all the fucking piece of shit assholes who kept the poor thing locked up. AND WHATEVER HAPPENED TO TRANQUILIZER GUNS???!!!!! mad puke

this has been gone over a few times already, but hey, why not give it one more go:

a) the options for many big cats, especially this breed of tiger, are slim. generally either they die or end up in zoos. given what the first option is, the second one is better.

b) if you're going to comment please, please read the article and the ensuing comments. the dudes with tranq guns were out looking for the tiger, but the police found it first and had no choice but to shoot her when she turned to attack them.

now, can we stop with the "fuck them for shooting the tiger!", "i feel worse for the tiger than the people mauled/killed!" and "zoos suck!!!!" comments?

Good luck with that, folks just tend to focus on the result rather than the cause. whatever

Heh...

People really like to jump to conclusions don't they? Like, if a tiger kills someone, it must have been that person's fault. Of course, all it really took to turn the thread in that direction was one small piece of evidence that wasn't really linked to anything or represented in a context larger than itself.

I thought people here used to be a little more objective than that. Either I'm right, or I just don't share the same opinion anymore.

In other news, lemmings maul tiger thread.

From SF Gate (see link in Subrosa's post)

On Thursday, Fong denied earlier reports that police were looking into the possibility that the victims had dangled a leg or other body part over the edge of the moat, after a shoe and blood was found inside the enclosure. No shoe was found inside, but a shoeprint was found on the railing of the fence surrounding the enclosure, and police are checking it against the shoes of the three victims, she said.

I predict both these posts will continue to be ignored so that more members can display how their misplaced self-righteousness far, far exceeds their intelligence and grasp of logic. "omg that kid had it coming becuz zoos are totally mean to teh aminals!!111"

If you think that being mauled to death by a tiger is an appropriate "punishment" of a teenage kid for the heinous crime of visiting the zoo, can we establish that an equivalent penalty is demanded for those who make those kind of vacuous, tasteless comments?

The more this story unfolds, the more blame can be found everywhere, perhaps hence the outrage. The guys were tauting the animal? the wall was how many feet too short? the lion tried to eat how many people previously? shocked

Traditional zoos that try to show everyone an exotic animal up close and caged are pretty poorly designed to meet the long-term needs of the animals. Animal conservatories that try harder in name can be frustrating for tourists who don't want to struggle to see their animals.

It is a sick world we live in.

Comic relief? who recalls this cartoon from the 1960's from the bugs bunny show abt the buy who just can't stop taunting the lion?
